Cloud Atlas Header

The Tom Tykwer, Andy and Lana Wachowski-directed epic Cloud Atlas will hit the film festival circuit, making its official debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Since we’ve seen so little of this film (outside of the usual leaked photos and end of principal photography photo) we were bound to see some official images from the set.

Cloud Atlas

When Tom Tykwer and Andy & Lana Wachowski completed the principal photography for the adaptation of David Mitchell‘s Cloud Atlas in late December, it had no distributor. But that’s why we have film festivals like the one being held at Cannes. According to Thompson on Hollywood, Warner Bros. has picked up the distribution rights for Cloud Atlas for $20 million, and will release the movie on December 6th, which is the perfect time to release a movie if you are aiming for some awards.

But what makes Cloud Atlas so ambitious is that it will have multiple stories taking place in multiple generations with multiple characters involved. The film stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant, and Bae Doona, all of whom will be playing these multiple characters in these stories that span generations.

Release Date: March 31, 2009

Forget for a moment how you felt when you watched The Matrix Reloaded and then The Matrix Revolutions. Forget that those movies may have tainted your feeling on the original. Forget the pseudo-philosophical babble and the height of the story nearly causing the entire thing to collapse on top of itself. Forget that you ever knew the term “bullet time.” Forget all of that and try to remember how you felt back in 1999 when you sat in the movie theater and first saw a stranger new sci-fi action flick called The Matrix.

To call The Matrix a revolutionary film (even for the time) would be to completely miss the point. The Matrix wasn’t anything new — it was just a new way of bringing that style of story to audiences. Anyone that was fond of comics or anime was already familiar with the storytelling style of The Matrix. What it did was introduce that style to the masses. Remember, this was before “˜geek’ was considered cool, so being into comics or anime made you more of an outcast than trendy.
