Oathbreaker Band Photo

Oathbreaker hails from Belgium and plays a unique blend of hardcore and black metal. Vocalist Caro Tanghe moves effortlessly between sultry clean vocals and a feral scream that will send chills down your spine and the music follows suit.

On September 30, Oathbreaker released its third full length album entitled Rheia via Deathwish Inc. The record is absolutely stunning. You should definitely check it out as soon as possible. In the meantime, here is the first video from the album featuring the conjoined tracks “10:56” and “Second Son of R.”

Carach Angren Band Photo

Carach Angren means “Iron Jaws” in the Elvish language of Sindarin and appears as the name of a mountain pass in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It is also the moniker of one of symphonic metal’s most celebrated modern bands.

Hailing from The Netherlands, Carach Angren (the band) has released four full-length albums and two extended plays since their formation in 2003. All of the band’s records so far have been horror-themed concept albums. The latest of those endeavors is the 2015 album This Is No Fairytale.

Mist of Misery Band Photo 2016

Swedish band Mist of Misery has just released its second full-length album via Black Lion Records. It is titled Absence and it is a tour de force of symphonic black metal. The record marks a notable upgrade in songwriting and production quality from the already impressive trio. Formed in 2010, they have also previously released two excellent EPs in addition to their debut album Bleak Autumn.

Absence is an album that is truly meant to be listened to as a whole, nevertheless, the band has released a single and it is the album’s title track. It is also our pick for this week’s featured Black Metal Friday track. If you like what you’re hearing here, I strongly recommend that you pick up a copy of Absence and enjoy it in it’s entirety.

Anaal Nathrakh Band Photo

There is heavy metal and then there is Birmingham steel. England’s most famous foundry town has been an epicenter of extreme music ever since Black Sabbath (arguably) invented heavy metal there in the late 1960s. Birmingham has given us some of metal’s most seminal bands such as Judas Priest and Napalm Death. But perhaps the most extreme and currently influential band to hail from the midlands town is one that not many people outside of the genre of black metal have ever heard of. They are the two man force of nature known as Anaal Nathrakh.

Their name comes from a charm recited by the wizard Merlin in the 1981 film Excalibur and for the last eighteen years they have been casting a spell of their own on extreme metal fans across the globe. Their abrasive elixir consists of black metal with heaping helpings of death metal, grindcore, and industrial music.
