Big Trouble in Little China #1 cover banner

Back in February, BOOM! Studios released a teaser image drawn by Eric Powell (The Goon), but provided no other information for what looked to be a new comic book based on the 1986 John Carpenter film Big Trouble in Little China. The image showed the character Jack Burton, played by Kurt Russell in the film, from the neck down, wearing his signature white Fu Manchu tank top and jeans, holding a knife and a semi-automatic handgun. The tagline on the teaser was “Everybody relax! I’m here,” a popular quote from the movie.

Now, BOOM! has finally revealed some details about the project, as well as released five cover images for Big Trouble in Little China #1, the start of the publisher’s new on-going comic book series from Powell and Brian Churilla (The Sixth Gun: Sons of the Gun) being overseen by the film’s director John Carpenter.

Check out all the covers here below.

Unexplained mysteries, no matter how radical or bizarre, have always been, to some extent, an obsessive interest of mine. Things like Roswell 1947 or The Zodiac Killer have fascinated me – both with the factual evidence available, and the speculative theories offered from both believers and questioners alike. Both examples cited have had their share of fictional representation in media, but the mystery of D. B. Cooper has yet to have a central role in stories”¦ until now.

While some fans may protest that the television series Prison Break had the Cooper mystery involved, it was not the central focus of the story. Finally, the enigma has entered the universe of comic books in a starring role, with Oni Press’ The Secret History of D. B. Cooper, affording a wildly speculative adventure mixing science fiction with espionage and psychedelic overtones.

Geeks of Doom Invades C2E2 2010

2009-04-16-infinityAt yesterday’s MONDO MARVEL panel at the 2010 Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) saw a bunch of new titles announced, and one that has me excited is an out of continuity project by Atomic Robo writer Brian Clevinger.

The new series is called The Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet and was described as a complete reimagining of the original story, published in 1991. Apparently Clevinger was told to read the original series, then forget everything he just read and come up with his own Infinity Gauntlet story.

In the new story, Thanos has the Infinity Guantlet and a group of Avengers has to get it back before everything dies. We’ll have to read the series to find out exactly how it differs from the original story, but if it’s anything like Clevinger’s other works, it will have a lot of action and humor.

The Anchor Vol 1 TPBThe Anchor
Vol. 1: The Five Furies
Written by Phil Hester
Art by Brian Churilla
BOOM! Studios
Release date: February 10, 2010

By Seaberry

The Anchor is an interesting tale about a being who is the wall between Hell and Earth. While his soul battles demons in Hell, he also battles evil beings on Earth. Very little can hurt him, but whatever damage is done to him in Hell will manifest itself on his earthly body. He has very few memories of the past, dresses and speaks in an outdated manner, and has the anchor-shaped cross of Saint Clement on his belt. The first trade, The Five Furies, introduces the Anchor, his supporting cast, and his unusual mission.

Anchor first appears in Reykjavik, Iceland, after a giant monster has attacked the town. His purple skin, large frame, and constantly appearing wounds make him a bit of an enigma. He quickly befriends a nurse named Hofi Eriksdotter and she winds up accompanying him on his mission to defeat the Five Furies, a group of monsters spread around the globe that cause massive amounts of destruction and death. Along the way, the Anchor slowly gains his memories back, learning the truth about himself and his origins.
