Captain Kirk shirt

The t-shirt deal of the day over at RIPT Apparel is a Star Trek-inspired shirt called “Original Space Drunk.”

The tee, by artist D4N13L, went on sale at RIPT today, Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at midnight CST, and will continue for 24 hours from then, and once it’s over, it will not be sold on the site anymore.

The design is a parody of the Captain Morgan rum label, replacing the swashbuckling rum mascot with Star Trek‘s Captain Kirk, who here has his foot up on a downed Red Shirt with the Enterprise starship in the background. Original Spiced Gold becomes Original Space Drunk, and the text underneath tells us all about how Captain Kirk is “boldly going anywhere, banging anything, and getting red shirts killed in the process” (which is pretty spot on).

Star Trek meets Black Label Society

William Shatner is working on another music project, and this time it’s all about metal. Following a “space” theme, and titled Seeking Major Tom, Shatner is joining forces with some major hard rock icons for the new project, which is set to be released later this year. Essentially, the release is a covers album, but with covers brought together to tell the story of a concept album.

So far, Shatner has collaborated with Brian May (Queen), Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne/Black Label Society), Peter Frampton, Ian Paice (Deep Purple), and Steve Howe (Yes). Seeking Major Tom is said to be a collection of 18 “rock anthems” reinterpreted to tell the story that Shatner is putting forward on the album.

Week of Geek: Star Trek banner

The career of William Alan Shatner will be nothing short of legendary when people read about him in history books at the turn of the next century. How is it that one man can achieve so much all the while at the same time giving you the feeling that he’s not really taking a single one of his performances seriously. Actor, singer, songwriter, stand up comedian, negotiator of pricelines — and let’s not forget the role that created a now fabled science fiction archetype: The Space Captain.

So you can imagine the heartbreak we Geeks of Doom felt upon hearing that The Shat had not been asked to join the cast of the new Star Trek film. The Federation may have a new Kirk sitting in the Enterprise, but it’s impossible to forget the Shat’s epic mark on the world. Below are just six reasons why Bill Shatner is the greatest performer of all-time. [Feel free to comment with additional reasons.]
