| Carrie Fisher, Actress, Writer, and Star Wars Princess Leia, Has Died
Carrie Fisher, best known for her iconic role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, died today after suffering a heart attack a few days ago on a flight from London to Los Angeles, according to THR. She was 60. Born in Beverly Hills, CA, in 1956, the actress and writer grew up in the spotlight as the child of stars Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher. While she often performed live alongside her mother, Fisher made her big-screen debut at 19 in 1975’s Shampoo starring opposite Warren Beatty. But it was her next film, 1977’s Star War: A New Hope, George Lucas’s unexpected mega-hit scifi adventure that spawned one of the biggest franchises of all time, that led her to become a household name and a role model to little girls — and women — everywhere.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
3D Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

Director: J.J. Abrams
Cast: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Max von Sydow, Gwendoline Christie
Studio: Walt Disney Pictures
Release Date: November 15, 2016 Star Wars: The Force Awakens was one of my favorite movies of 2015, and is a film I’ve written a lot about here — bottom line, I love it! Does it have its flaws? Sure, but nothing that I feel hampers the enjoyment of watching it. While there are those who feel it’s a retread of the original trilogy, I believe that it’s a worthy addition to the Star Wars universe. The film was released in Blu-ray back in April and included a host of bonus features that delved into the making of the sequel. But, sadly, it didn’t include feature-length audio commentary, which is an extra I love on home video releases, especially for an extravaganza like this. Now, Disney has released The Force Awakens as a 3D Blu-ray Collector’s Edition that does include commentary from J.J. Abrams, which to me makes this set worth getting. It also includes the original bonus features, along with several all-new featurettes. So, if you don’t already own this, definitely grab this collector’s edition.

| Carrie Fisher Reveals Affair With Harrison Ford During ‘Star Wars’ Filming
Well, this is definitely one way to sell a book: Carrie Fisher, best known for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, revealed that her upcoming book, The Princess Diarist, talks about her long-ago affair with co-star Harrison Ford. The actress told People that at 19 while filming Star Wars back in 1976, she had a 3-month romance with her then-33-year-old co-star Ford, who played Han Solo in the film. At that time, Ford was married to his first wife Mary Marquardt, and had two children (the couple divorced in 1979).

The World According To Star Wars
Hardcover | Kindle Edition | Audio CD
Written by Cass R. Sunstein
Dey Street Books
Release Date: May 31st, 2016 No one can deny the power of the Force as it permeates all aspects of American society (and other societies), including education and especially pop culture. It’s amazing how a silly little science fiction movie from the 1970s became a global phenomenon, spawning bunches of movies, television shows, books, and toys for billions of dollars. I remember sitting in a college mythology class reading Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With a Thousand Faces, and the professor said, “Luke Skywalker follows the cycle of the hero,” and I perked up. He really does. I, in turn, taught mythology to high school students and used Luke Skywalker (and Neo from Matrix). I’ve also discussed it right here on Geeks of Doom, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. And that is just a drop of what Cass R. Sunstein discusses in his soon-to-be-required-for-college text, The World According To Star Wars. More below.
