Kim Fowley

Legendary Runaways producer and Los Angeles rock legend Kim Fowley died today after a long battle with cancer, although no official cause of death has been released at this time, according to Rolling Stone. He was 75.

The son of actors, the Los Angeles, CA-born Fowley began his career in the music business in 1959 and spent the 1960s working with acts such as Paul Revere and the Raiders and Gene Vincent. His career as a solo artist yielded a minor hit when his third LP, 1968’s Outrageous, broke Billboard’s Top 200. Many credited Fowley with the advent of the raised lighter concert salute after he encouraged the crowd to do it while MCing John Lennon’s Toronto Rock and Roll Revival performance in 1969.

Joan JettWe’re starting to see a lot of promo now for The Runaways, which will get a wide release next month, in the form of clips, images, and TV interviews. The movie is based on the all-girl rock band of the same name, which rose to stardom in the 1970s and launched the career of rock goddess Joan Jett.

On Tuesday night, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts performed The Runaways popular tune “Cherry Bomb” on The Tonight Show and afterward Jett sat down to talk with host Jay Leno about the film and her beginnings as a teenage rock star.

Watch the video of the performance and interview here below.

This isn’t Jett’s first outing for the film. In January at the Sundance Film Festival, where the film make its debut, Jett come out for a performance and stars Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart (the latter stars in the movie as a teenage Joan Jett) join the band on stage.

You’ll probably be hearing a lot of “Cherry Bomb” in the next few weeks, as the song from the film is already streaming online, along with a music video from The Runaways. Jett co-wrote the song back in the 1970s and re-recorded it with The Blackhearts for her 1984 solo album Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth.

The Runaways movie posterTwo very cool items to report tonight regarding The Runaways movie.

First, there’s the final theatrical movie poster. Check it out there at right (click for larger, full view). It’s basically one of the previously released images of Dakota Fanning at Cherie Currie and Kirsten Stewart as Joan Jett. But, it’s one bad-ass picture!

This movie poster image also makes an appearance in the second Runaways news of the night — the full, theatrical trailer! It’s online right now and you can watch it right here below! In the trailer, there’s a quick shot of the two characters in the scene from the poster.

This new trailer gives us a lot more insight on the film, a biopic about the 1970s all-girl teenage rock band, The Runaways. We see a little bit about Joan Jett’s early ambition to start an all-girl rock band, and Cherie Currie’s desire to make a change in her life.

I talked a bit about the movie’s soundtrack earlier this evening [read Listen Now: Dakota Fanning Sings “˜Cherry Bomb’ On “˜Runaways’ Soundtrack for more about the soundtrack and how to hear a song from the album]. The soundtrack contains several Runaways covers, with Fanning and Stewart providing the vocals. In the new trailer, you hear “Cherry Bomb,” which was in the teaser trailer, and for the first time, two other songs: “California Paradise” and “Dead End Justice.”
