For horror fans everywhere Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut is without a doubt one of the most highly-anticipated home video releases of not just 2014 but possibly all time. Clive Barker‘s horror-fantasy cult classic has traveled one of the roughest roads imaginable from the writer-director’s initial conceptions of the story, to its troubled production and theatrical release, and lastly to the audience that discovered on video what had been ignored at the box office.

The fan-created “Cabal Cut” of Nightbreed that first began being assembled over five years ago sought to restore Barker’s film to its intended epic form, and toured horror and comic conventions all over the world to great success in the hope that one day it would receive an official release. Finally Shout! Factory picked up the rights to release the extended Nightbreed on Blu-ray and DVD this year. Despite being pushed back several months from its original projected summer debut in order to allow more time for a proper restoration of the longer director’s cut, Scream Factory revived interest in the long-awaited Blu-ray via an announcement today offering tons of information. Another one of Clive Barker‘s Books of Blood short stories is being adapted into a feature length movie. So far, previous adaptations include Candyman, Lord of Illusions, and Midnight Meat Train.

The next to get the movie treatment is Jacqueline Ess: Her Will and Testament, which follows a housewife who becomes so bored with her life that she tries to commit suicide. She fails, but when she awakens, she discovers that she has acquired the ability to change people’s body shapes with only her mind.

Starring in the movie, simply titled Jacqueline Ess, will be Lena Headey. Headey is best known as Queen Cersei Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, as well as Queen Gorgo in 300 and its sequel 300: Rise of an Empire.

We’ve heard about a planned Hellraiser remake for many years now, but nothing has ever come of it…thankfully.

But now comes news straight from the man who created Hellraiser, Clive Barker, which will have those who hate remakes conflicted and confused. According to Barker, he’s now working on the remake himself, and has full intentions of bringing back Doug Bradley to play Pinhead.

This past weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con unleashed the usual torrential downpour of geek-pleasuring news stories such as this and obviously this. But as far as I’m concerned the biggest news coming out of the Con was the announcement that Shout! Factory was planning on releasing several beloved action and horror movies on DVD and Blu-ray later this year and early in 2014 through their Scream Factory label.

Among their slate of upcoming titles are John Carpenter’s inner city siege story Assault on Precinct 13, the 1982 remake of Cat People directed by Taxi Driver/Rolling Thunder writer Paul Schrader, and Sam Raimi’s outrageous pre-Spider Man superhero adventure Darkman featuring Liam Neeson kicking major butt almost two decades before he played that guy whose daughter was…you know…Taken.
