Forget the theater altogether, this year’s biggest movie comes to the Syfy network, and will crush all ratings competitors in its jaws. Of course, I’m talking about Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!

Sharknado 2: The Second One Sharknado 3 adds David Hasselhoff

Picture it… beautiful sandy beaches, gorgeous babes running in slow-mo… and of course… THE HOFF! If you were growing up in the 1990s, Baywatch, and David Hasselhoff were a crucial part of the pop culture zeitgeist. It was at-the-same-time ridiculous, over the top, campy, sexy and fun. In July 2015, those exact words can be used to describe the newest pop-culture ICON… SHARKNADO!!!

From the infamous Asylum Productions, Sharknado became a phenomenon when it debuted on Syfy back in 2013. Coming this July, the perfect storm is hitting with Sharknado 3, which will feature none other than Mitch Buchannon himself, David Hasselhoff.

Grindhouse

I was born a poor white child in the waning winter days of 1979. Never was I able to step foot inside a grindhouse theater, and the only time I ever went to a drive-in theater that wasn’t doubling as a flea market was to see Fletch when I was barely old enough to remember going in the first place. VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, and spending a lot of time at the houses of friends and relatives with access to pay cable movie channels helped fill me in on the deranged cinematic greatness I was too young to catch first run in its proper theatrical venue. Being born in the wrong place at the seriously wrong time was no excuse for me to not become a fervent admirer of the finest exploitation movies ever made.

B-movies, C-movies, Z-movies, I’ve seen a lot. If I lived a few extra lifetimes after my first ran out I could never be able to see all of the movies I ever wanted to see. My DVD and Blu-ray collection isn’t massive (getting there though) and yet there are still a few titles I have yet to sit down and watch. Sue me, I stay pretty busy most of the time. Once upon a time there were theaters from the largest metropolises to the smallest one-horse burgs that specialized in playing the kinds of offbeat, occasionally undefinable, made-for-a-quick-buck flicks that were too gonzo to show its grimy celluloid visage in mainstream cinemas that primarily attracted bored suburbanites and their spoiled, hateful children. You could see a lot of these schlocky gems in double or triple feature bills or “dusk ’till dawn” marathons that cost substantially less for a ticket than a IMAX 3D screening, even with inflation taken into account. You definitely got your money’s worth, that could not be denied.

Piranha 3DD

So what’s the big difference between the new red band trailer for Dimension Films’ summer splatter spectacle sequel Piranha 3DD and the tamer theatrical trailer that was released almost a month ago? In the words of Chris Griffin, “BOOBIES!”

You can watch the red band trailer here below.

In addition to the bounty of bouncing boobage on display here we have David Hasselhoff in a cheeky cameo, Ving Rhames getting all Planet Terror-ed up, Gary Busey getting gnawed up by piranha guppies, and the lovely Danielle Panabaker doing a Shivers/Slither bathtub homage. The Feast team of director John Gulager and screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (with additional assistance from producer Joel Soisson) are on hand to orchestrate another glorious ballet of carnage and chesticles.

The 3D horror remake sequel Piranha 3DD was originally supposed to open last November before it was pulled from Dimension Films’ release schedule and given an unspecified 2012 premiere date, but that didn’t stop the studio from releasing a new trailer today.

Alexandre Aja, the director of the 2010 hit Piranha 3D, has turned over his directorial duties to John Gulager this time around.

Piranha 3DD

At the Spike TV 2011 Scream Awards, Piranha 3D won the award for Most Memorable Mutilation for the scene where the girl gets scalped alive by a motorboat.

To accept the award was none other than Scalped Alive By Motorboat Girl herself, a massive digitally projected talking head which arose from the pool of water on stage, who, while honored and excited to accept the award, went on to introduce the world premiere of the teaser trailer for Piranha 3D.

Watch the teaser trailer here below.

The Top 5 Casting Decisions That Could Kill An ‘Iron Man’ Sequel
space
Dr. Geek, Ph.D.   |

Iron ManIron Man was a great movie. With an unusual amount of humor and sarcastic wit, the movie took on the usually tough assignment of telling the superhero origin myth and as a result became a summer favorite with audiences. It also was a financial powerhouse, earning nearly $320 million in U.S. domestic receipts by the end of September.

With such success, a sequel is inevitable. Hollywood being Hollywood, someone will always suggest a way to “improve” a monster hit. Take the much-publicized decision to replace Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle in the sequel. While I do not think that Mr. Howard was the strongest link in the first movie, that opinion has much more to do with the fact that the character of James “Rhodey” Rhodes was a minor, supporting character in this version of the origin myth, and not any reflection on Mr. Howard’s acting chops. Yet, I’m sure that someone in Hollywood felt that Mr. Cheadle will add something more to Rhodey either being Iron Man or War Machine in the next film. People say “don’t mess with a winning formula,” but they’ve never heard that rule in Hollywood (or never listened, if they did.)

So, it is in the spirit of messing with a winning formula that I offer some further boneheaded casting changes and the rationale behind them that could be proposed by some mid-level Hollywood creative type hoping to make a mark on Tinsel Town …
