Disfear is a Swedish heavy metal/crust punk supergroup. The band, which has been active off and on since the early ’90s, includes members of At The Gates and Entombed. Their most recent release was the 2008 masterpiece Live the Storm, which was produced and engineered by Converge mastermind Kurt Ballou.

Akani is an international supergroup of sorts. The band’s lineup has, at various times, included members of legendary New York hardcore band Merauder, as well as a plethora of Swedish death metal institutions such as At The Gates, Entombed, and Soilwork.

Their debut full-length album, Through My Darkest Infernal, was released this past Friday, July 15, 2016 and is a blistering slice of metallic hardcore. I strongly recommend checking it out. Swedish death metal pioneers Entombed stood out from many of their contemporaries due to their “buzzsaw” guitar tone. It was a tone that would inspire countless bands in its wake. Converge guitarist and producer extraordinaire Kurt Ballou has often cited hearing Entombed as the moment that he realized hardcore and metal could be combined with such spectacular results.

Entombed would evolve beyond straight death metal over the course of their nine studio albums, leaning more and more towards a sound they called “death and roll.” With the departure of founding guitarist Alex Hellid in 2013, it seemed as though Entombed had come to an end. However, the remaining members regrouped under the moniker of Entombed A.D. and released their debut record Back to the Front in 2014.

Today’s Massive Metal Monday track takes us back to 1993 and Entombed’s killer third album Wolverine Blues. Here with the official video for the title track is Entombed performing “Wolverine Blues.”

Entombed is a hugely influential Swedish Death and Roll band that has been active since 1987. Death and Roll is a sub-genre that might not even exist without Entombed in fact. They were among the very first acts to conjoin the sound of death metal to groove metal and classic rock. The band’s third album, Wolverine Blues, is considered a seminal moment in the establishment of the form.

They were also one of the first metal bands to utilize the “buzzsaw” guitar tone that has always been so prevalent in punk rock. Their guitar sound was so unique in metal that Kurt Ballou of groundbreaking metal core band Converge has sighted seeing Entombed on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball in the early ’90s as the inspiration for his legendary guitar tone.
