SDCC 2014: Mad Max: Fury Road panel

Mad Max, the Australian 1979 cult film which became one of the most original, dystopian, and riveting action pictures of all time, spawning a franchise and making its original titualar character Mel Gibson a superstar, is being rebooted. Hall H in today’s Warner Brothers panel proceedings gave the details of Mad Max: Fury Road at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con in sunny San Diego, California.

Moderated by the witty Chris Hardwick and showcasing one George Miller, who directed not only the original film but is also handling the reboot from the directorial chair, there was a wonderful poignancy to their chat, especially when Miller let slip that this was his very first Comic-Con appearance. Miller himself gave us a backstory on the original film and that he was spellbound that he was actually making a new version of the franchise in 2014.

Daniel Radcliffe Horns movie

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe made his San Diego Comic-Con debut today at the convention center’s massive Hall H auditorium for the panel for his upcoming film, Horns, based on the Joe Hill novel. Attendees got to see the U.S. premiere of the trailer, as well as a clip from the movie (footage description here below).

Radcliffe turned 25 two days ago, so the huge crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to him. He was joined on the panel with Joe Hill and director Alexandre Aja, who Radcliffe said weaved the horror and humor elements from the book perfectly for the film.

In the movie, Radcliffe plays Ig, who is accused of raping and killing his girlfriend, Mary (played by Juno Temple). While he’s facing the hatred from his fellow townspeople, who believe he’s guilty regardless of the evidence, Ig one day wakes up with a pair of horns on his head. The horns compel anyone Ig encounters to tell the truth and act on their impulses. As the story continues, Ig struggles to find Mary’s real killer and his character begins to change as well.

SDCC 2014: Game of Thrones panel

The cast of HBO’s hit series Game Of Thrones along with creator George R.R. Martin and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss made an appearance today in Hall H today at San Diego Comic-Con. The actors on the panel were Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Natalie Dormer (Margaery Baratheon), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Rose Leslie (Ygritte), Rory McCann (Sandor Clegane “The Hound”), Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark).

All the cast members received a loud round of applause, though Pedro Pascal, who plays Oberyn Martell The Red Viper, got the loudest response it seemed. Moderator Craig Ferguson jokingly asked the panel which of them was still alive on the show, considering that some of the actors’ characters were killed off (a specialty of Martin’s).

A blooper reel was shown, but the big reveal for the panel was a video introducing the new cast members for season five and something about their characters (mostly, their weaponry). Filming will take part for some scenes in Spain, Ireland, and Croatia, and will introduce more of the Dornish characters. The standout actors revealed for next season include Alexander Diddig (of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fame) as Doran Martell, Jonathan Pryce as High Sparrow, and Keisha Castle-Hughes (from Whale Rider) as Obara Sand, the bastard daughter of Oberyn Martell.

Watch the new cast member video here below.

The Last of Us comic-con panel

The first panel in Friday’s San Diego Comic-Con Hall H was listed solely as “Sneak Preview,” so the audience didn’t know what to expect. The lights dimmed, and the distinctive guitar of Gustavo Santaolalla filled the room.

A trailer for a remastered version of Naughty Dog’s groundbreaking PlayStation game The Last of Us played on the screens, ending with the text “Soon to be a major motion picture.” The crowd erupted as the house lights went up and Entertainment Weekly’s Dalton Ross came to the podium. He announced that this panel will be to discuss the film adaptation in development and introduced producer Sam Raimi and original video game writer and creative director Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog to the panel.

SDCC 2014: Paramount panel

The final film panel of San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H on Thursday belonged to Paramount Pictures, which presented Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Project Almanac, Hercules, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.

As the room darkened the voice of SpongeBob Squarepants was heard over the speakers, searching for Hall H. Voice actor Tom Kenny then came on to cheers from the crowd as he introduced footage from the film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, in which Spongebob and crew have to leave the ocean to become superheroes to save Bikini Bottom. This was followed by a video retrospective of the history of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, from the earliest sketches to the cultural phenomenon that followed.
