Titan Comics
Release Date: March 23, 2016

In 1996, an alien armada attempted to destroy humanity in order to gain access to the precious natural resources that it needed to survive. Fortunately for mankind, a scientist and his eccentric father stumbled upon a way to temporarily bring down the defenses of this significantly more advanced race. Falling back on Morse code as a means to communicate with other military units across the globe, a plan was hatched to destroy the aliens’ shields and go on the offensive. Through determination and sheer luck, they won the day.

This series picks up right at the end of Independence Day and will be bridging the gap between that film and the upcoming sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, due out this June! So, without further ado, I present to you Independence Day #1 from Titan Comics!

Mars Attacks Judge Dredd #1 starts in a dark room with shadowy figures, talking about the mega-mafia. It quickly devolves into an argument about who is in charge, until a man shows up and says he is the only person to control the mega-mafia. A month later, Judge Dredd gets called in to help the North Sector with their troubles with the mega-mafia’s new plans.

The art, by John McCrea, is all over the place, sometimes clear as day, sometimes looking like a photograph from the ’40s. It works well with the writing though, and doesn’t interfere with reading the comic. The writing, by Al Ewing, doesn’t stand out in any way; it is clear and coherent, but not much else.

Mars Attacks #1 was a very different sort of animal. Sure, you can guess by the title that there are creatures from the planet Mars and that they’re attacking, but beyond that, it’s really not like what you’d expect at all.

John Layman takes the old Mars Attacks formula and turns it a little bit askew from what we’re used to. And it works like a charm!! I know you’re sick of my saying this, but I try to NEVER give away spoilers, but this story is told from an unusual point of view. There’s also an unusual narrative within the book, one that makes you want the LAST issue (or close to it) to get here as quickly as possible.
