The Curse of La Llorona
Director: Michael Chaves
Writer: Mikki Daughtry, Tobias Iaconis
Cast: Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz, Patricia Velásquez, Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen, Roman Christou, Sean Patrick Thomas
Distributor: Warner Bros.
Rated R| Minutes: 93
Release Date: April 18, 2019 Representation matters in film in any genre. It doesn’t matter if it’s a romantic comedy, a superhero tentpole, or a horror, moviegoers have shown that they are hungry for these different kinds of stories, with different perspectives and different cultural touchstones. And as The Conjuring Universe continues to expand, it will mine all sorts of different kinds of creepy folklore and urban legends in order to keep the scares coming. Such is the case with The Curse of La Llorona, which is based on a Mexican urban legend about the ghost of a woman who drowned her children and now cries while looking for them in the river, often causing misfortune to those who are near or hear her. Utilizing old school camera techniques and deliberately slow pacing, there are plenty of jump scares and nerve-wracking moments. But there is hardly anything else for the audience to care about. Green Book
Director: Peter Farrelly
Writers: Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie
Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini
Studio: Universal Pictures
Rated R | 130 Minutes
Release Date: November 16, 2018 Race is a touchy subject for any film to address. But Peter Farrelly‘s Green Book addresses it earnestly and with heartwarming charm. Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali give us two of the most powerful performances of the year. While it is a familiar story that doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, it reminds us that something as simple as friendship can be powerful enough to break down the barriers of racism and social inequalities. | ‘The Curse Of La Llorona’ Trailer: Folktale To Some, Terrifying Cursed Mother Preying On Children To Others
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema released a preview of their horror slate at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year. One of the films that made a huge impression was Michael Chaves‘ The Curse of La Llorona. Chaves has since signed on to direct The Conjuring 3. That’s the kind of vote of confidence WB has in him. Which also proves that The Curse of La Llorona could be a hit. Now the studio has released the first trailer for the upcoming horror film, which will have you roll up your windows and lock your car doors. Or die trying. Check out the first trailer for the film and a poster below.
