If you were offered the chance to become one of the first human beings on Mars and begin colonizing the planet—with the one teeny tiny little catch that you would never be able to return to Earth, never see your family again, and would die (one way or another) on the Red Planet—would you do it? Most people—even the most fascinated and excited by the thought of being the first humans to go there and explore the unexplored and begin colonizing another world—would likely say no to such a proposition. And have no trouble doing so. This is because there’s just so many variables, and the commitment and risk are simply far too great. But some people would take this leap.
