Loki

When it was announced that Marvel Studios would be releasing a number of TV series on Disney’s new streaming service Disney+ it was implied that they would connect to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, more so than the previous Marvel TV series. That theory was proven to be true when it was announced that WandaVision would be connected to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Kevin Feige Comic-Con #4

This is just a conversation that will not end. Ever since Martin Scorsese claimed that superhero films aren’t cinema, everyone has shared their opinions on the matter. Scorsese even doubled down at one point in time, while Francis Ford Coppola echoed his sentiments.

However, there are those who have defended superhero films, like James Gunn, Kevin Smith, and Jon Favreau. Even Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke out against Scorsese’s comments. But one person we had yet to hear from is Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer, Kevin Feige. The man who has been a part of the studio since the very beginning is finally sharing his thoughts about Scorsese’s opinions on Marvel films. That all changed this past weekend as Peyton Reed, who directed Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2017), signed on to direct the third installment of the film franchise for Marvel Studios. More on the report below.

Jon Favreau

These past few weeks have seen some of the greatest directors of the century criticizing Marvel movies and superhero films as a whole for not being real cinema. And then there are those like James Gunn and Kevin Smith, who defend Marvel by saying that they are cinema. So as the two sides plead their cases, the director who helped launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe is sharing his thoughts.

Jon Favreau, who directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and appeared in Iron Man 3, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home, took some time off during The Mandalorian press circuit to talk about the comments made by Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, and gave a rather composed response to their criticism of Marvel Studios films.
