The Best Metal Albums of 2015

2015 has sucked in almost every way for me and for a lot of people that I know, too. You could say it was full of Trials and Tribulation (that’ll be funny AFTER you see the top of my list). Fortunately, we were gifted a litany of top-shelf metal albums to get us through it without losing our minds. The following are the top 20 metal records that I subjected my children to while driving them all over L.A. I have to admit that there was so much great stuff this year that I sort of cheated here by including a very extensive “honorable mentions” category for all of the other albums that might have made the list had the year ended when they came out. All of them are excellent efforts that I know I’ll be listening to for years to come.

Check out the list and let me know what you think in the comments below because if I know metalheads (and believe me, I do) you’ll all have some very strong opinions about your own likes and dislikes. The best thing about other people’s year-end “best of” list is that I always discover a few absolute gems that got past me during the year. Last year, you, the readers, even turned me on to Ne Obliviscaris and Solstafir, two amazing bands that I was unfamiliar with and whose albums should have been on my list. It is my hope that no matter what your opinion of my personal list is, that it will inspire you to check out some artists or records that you haven’t yet discovered. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your new favorite metal band contained herein.

Have a wonderful holiday season and rest up, because 2016 promises to be another pummeling year in extreme music. And be sure to stay tuned here at GoD because you know we’ll be doing our very best to keep you informed about all of it.

Motorhead Circa 1980

Phil Taylor, better known as Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor, former drummer for heavy metal icons Motorhead, died on Wednesday, November 11, 2015. He was 61.

Word of Taylor’s passing comes from his former Motorhead bandmate “Fast” Eddie Clarke, who posted the news today to his official Facebook page, noting that his friend “had been ill for sometime.” There was no mention of the cause of death.

The British-born Taylor was drummer for the popular Motorhead line-up that consisted of Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister on bass and vocals, and Clarke on guitar, and appeared on the band’s most classic albums, Overkill (1979), Bomber (1979), Ace of Spades (1980), and Iron Fist (1982). He was with the group from 1975 till 1984, when he left, but then he returned in 1987 for the album Rock and Roll before leaving again in 1992.

Probot with Dave Grohl Lemmy and Wino

You may have noticed that Massive Metal Monday took a well deserved week off for the recent Labor Day holiday here in the United States. But we’re back this week and in keeping with the spirit of Labor Day, this week’s Massive Metal Monday honors two of the hardest working dudes in all of rock, Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister and Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl.

Dave Grohl, although not really known as a metal musician, has always worn his fandom of the genre on his sleeve. In 2004, he released an all-star record of metal originals under the moniker of Probot and invited a veritable who’s who of metal gods to turn in guest performances. One of the standout tracks and only video released from the album was “Shake Your Blood.” Grohl played all of the instruments on the recording save for the bass, which Lemmy provided along with penning the lyrics for the song. The video features Scott “Wino” Weinrich from The Obsessed and Saint Vitus on guitar. (Wino also appeared on the album’s only single “The Emerald Law.”) The ladies featured in the video are from the adult website Suicide Girls.

So, without further ado, here are Lemmy, Wino, and Dave Grohl with this week’s rousing Massive Metal Monday track “Shake Your Blood.”

Listen Now: Motorhead’s Killer New Track “Thunder & Lightning”

Motorhead Band Photo

Motorhead front man Lemmy Kilmister is the Energizer Bunny of heavy metal; the man just keeps going and going and going… Despite several health scares which have caused some forced tour and show cancellations in recent years, Lemmy shows no signs of letting up. Sure, he’s had to slow down on his legendary diet consisting of little more than speed, Jack Daniels, and cigarettes, but otherwise it’s been business as usual.

Motorhead is set to release their 23rd studio album on August 28th. The record is called Bad Magic and according to several insiders that I know who have heard the record, it may be the band’s strongest effort in years. That’s really saying something, because 2013’s Aftershock was pretty freaking great in its own right.

The lead single from the album is out and it is a classic Motorhead barn-burner in the vein of “Ace of Spades.” The track is called “Thunder & Lightning” and you would never guess that it was the work of a nearly 70-year-old man! In fact, The Rolling Stones only wish that they still rocked this hard!

Check it out here below.

Thrashback Thanksgiving: “Motorhead” by Motorhead

Motorhead Circa 1980

As we here in the States take today to spend time with loved ones and give thanks for all of our blessings, we here at Geeks of Doom want to take a moment to give thanks for metal’s greatest blessing: Mr. Lemmy Kilmister and his merry band of miscreants, Motorhead. While not technically a thrash band in the modern sense of the word, there can be no mistake that Lemmy’s propensity for amphetamines led him to almost singlehandedly create the genre of speed metal, which in turn birthed thrash. It is difficult to imagine what the landscape of modern metal would look like if not for the institution that is Motorhead.

So enjoy your thanksgiving, don’t eat TOO much, and crank up some Motorhead loud enough so that even your deaf Aunt Irene can enjoy.
