| SDCC 2016: In The Not-Too-Distant Future, The Revived ‘MST3K’ Is Coming To Netflix |
Last November, Shout! Factory, which owns the rights to the cult classic comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, teamed up with the show’s creator and first host Joel Hodgson to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund a reboot of MST3K. Their target fundraising goal was set at $2 million, but the campaign ultimately became the highest-funded film and TV crowdfunding effort in history by raising a grand total of $5.7 million, allowing them to fund the production of 14 new episodes with an all-star squadron of geek icons and comedy geniuses working in front of and behind the camera. On Saturday at a panel for the MST3K revival at San Diego Comic-Con, the announcement was made that the new show will be coming exclusively to Netflix as part of a $5 billion investment from the film and television streaming giant in original programming, which also includes their Marvel Studios series and the recent Stranger Things.

Release Date: May 24, 2016 “Tolkien couldn’t follow this plot!” In this re-release of the second volume of episodes from the cult comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, Joel Hodgson, Michael J. Nelson, Tom Servo (Kevin Murphy), and Crow T. Robot (Trace Beaulieu) endure unimaginable – but wildly entertaining – cinematic atrocities. Originally released in 2003 by Rhino Entertainment, MST3K: Volume II fell out of print, allowing third-party sellers to raise prices to astronomical levels. Thankfully, Shout! Factory is here to save us from those price gouging fiends. In this collection, you’ll find cave dwellers, pod people, vengeful angels, and junior rodeo daredevils. MST3K: Volume II features three episodes from the Comedy Central era, two with Joel Hodgson as host and one with Mike Nelson. There’s also Shorts Vol. 1, which includes seven shorts from the series. It’s a fun, wide-ranging mix of episodes spanning seasons three and six. Continue reading for detailed synopses of each episode!
