Doctor Who Series 7 continues in a story told from the perspective of the Ponds, the Earth has become plagued by the mysterious appearance of black cubes across the planet. The Doctor (Matt Smith) begins an investigation into the cubes, with the assistance of some old friends with UNIT, only to find… nothing!

The cubes offer no clues to their appearance, but the Doctor can’t shake the feeling that they represent a grave danger to humanity…

During TARDISblend 55, we discuss the penultimate Pond story in the Doctor Who universe entitled The Power Of Three, told completely from the perspective of Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill). We also take a look at the guest appearances in this episode, with Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) fulfilling the role of the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (played by Nicholas Courtney in the Classic Doctor Who series), and the surprising and fun cameos that showed up as well.

The Daleks have been a long-term fixture in the chronicle of Doctor Who, and while the television series is two years shy of its 50th anniversary, it is when the evil enemies of the Doctor are used sparingly in the writing of the show that they tend to shine. They featured in only two adventures during Tom Baker‘s era, for example; and during his predecessor’s reign as the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee faced them three times.

Week of Geek: Countdown to Doctor Who, Series Six

With the new season of Doctor Who coming up on us quickly on April 23, there’s a level of anticipation and excitement among fans online I’ve not seen for quite some time. What’s interesting is I continually find myself running into new fans who have only ever seen the new Doctor Who series that has been going since 2005.

Indeed, to a generation of Doctor Who fans, there have been only three Doctors since they discovered the adventures of the Time Lord: Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and Matt Smith. And inevitably, many of these fans find themselves wanting to dive deeper into the mythos and legend of the good Doctor.

And why shouldn’t they? The series has had a legacy spanning close to half a century, with some amazing stories being created from some of the greatest creative minds including Terrence Dicks, Douglas Adams, Terry Nation, and so many more.

Doctor WhoFollowing Wondercon 2011, we are launching not one, but TWO episodes of TARDISblend this week! The promotions and publicity for Doctor Who Series 6 is moving full speed ahead, with many revelations, news items, rumors, spoilers, and other stuff abound. Co-host Tom Cheredar was on assignment for Geeks of Doom at WonderCon this year and got to catch up with both Toby Haynes and Neil Gaiman.

For episode 20 of the TARDISblend, we focus on the interview with Toby Haynes and on the two-part launching episode for Series 6 of Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon. Taking a look at the confirmed information, the spoilers, and the rumors, Tom and Greg speculate what the two opening shows may hold for the Doctor and his companions — in a season which (by some indications) may redefine how you view the show.

In addition to some of the news and rumors, we pay tribute to two Doctor Who legends who have since passed away: Nicholas Courtney aka The Brigadier, and Michael Gough aka The Celestial Toymaker. We reflect on their contributions to the show and to entertainment in general, and mourn these big losses.

The BrigadierToday marks a sad day around the universe for Doctor Who fans. Long-time cast member Nicholas Courtney has passed away at the age of 81. Courtney portrayed the famous Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, otherwise referred to as the Brigadier, alongside eight of the eleven Doctors. His first role as Lethbridge-Stewart was in The Web of Fear opposite Patrick Troughton‘s Second Doctor, and his final role in the Doctor Who universe was along with Elisabeth Sladen in a 2008 episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures entitled Enemy of the Bane.

Aside from Doctor Who, Courtney has made his mark in other television series over the years, including Escape, The Avengers, All Creatures Great and Small, and Yes Prime Minister. Despite his acting in other shows, he is forever known as the Brigadier, an aspect of his career Courtney was openly proud of.
