Rambo V

Just this past Monday, it was confirmed that a fifth movie in the Rambo franchise was officially given the go-ahead (Read: “˜Rambo 5″² Receives A Not At All Shocking Greenlight). In the Variety report, it was announced that this time, John Rambo would be heading back to the United States, and would be fighting “human traffickers and drug lords” on the Mexican border while trying to rescue a kidnapped little girl. As it turns out, this was about as far from the truth as can be. Ain’t It Cool News‘ Harry Knowles was able to talk to Sylvester Stallone himself, who shared what was really going down at this sure-to-be-messy new party. As it turns out, the movie will actually be introducing a touch of science fiction this time around.

First and foremost, it appears that the movie will be titled Rambo V: The Savage Hunt, as can be seen in the very, very basic poster that was made and can be seen above (click to go big). If this poster came from anywhere but the direct source, you would absolutely think it was fake, and probably be pretty confused, but there it is. And as the sub-title insinuates, this time, Rambo will be part of the hunt, as opposed to being hunted himself.

Rambo

Right around the time that Sylvester Stallone was finishing new installments in his Rocky and Rambo franchises, it was made clear that more movies in each franchise was not completely out of the question. Some times has passed, Stallone is nearing the completion of his next flick, The Expendables, and it is being reported that Rambo 5 has indeed been greenlit.

Nu Image/Millennium Films, who also handled The Expendables, were the ones who gave the go-ahead to this new Rambo project. The movie’s premise looks to take John Rambo away from the jungles and toward the United States/Mexico border, where he will take on human being traffickers and drug lords while attempting to rescue a kidnapped little girl.

Amazon is having a big Box Set Blowout, which has lots of great deals on DVD box sets, so I’ve listed several items that I thought might be of interest.

But first, let me tell you what just happens to be the Gold Box spotlight item of the day: The X-Files: The Complete Collector’s Edition, which you can get for only $123.99. That’s 62% off the regular price and let me tell you, I’ve have been waiting for this item to not only go on sale, but to even be available at all — most times you can’t even get this, so I’m thinking that I might just need to gift this item to myself. It’s just too good to pass up. This comprehensive box set includes all nine seasons of the television series, the original feature film Fight The Future — another typically hard to find item — plus, the Mythology Threads featurettes.

And speaking of The X-Files, it looks like they’re selling a 2-pack of both movies — Fight The Future and I Want To Believe — in Blu-ray for $39.99: The X-Files Movie 2-Pack [Blu-ray]. (By the way, there’s still a chance to win a DVD or Blu-ray copy of the recently released I Want To Believe in the Geeks of Doom X-Files Contest.)

Feel free to let me know what you think about these offers and if you’re planning on taking advantage of them! See list of noteworthy items here below.

Rambo: Still Buff, Bandannaed & Bad-Ass

RamboYesterday saw the release of Sylvester Stallone‘s Rambo, and while it didn’t top the box office (the top slot went to the spoof comedy Meet The Spartans), it did come in second with a gross of $6.7 million, making it the best opening day for a Sylvester Stallone film.

Not bad considering 1) it’s a January opening (a month with notoriously poor box office returns); 2) it’s up against January record breaker Cloverfield as well as Oscar-nominated films; and 3) it’s violent as hell.

Is Rambo really violent? Yes. Too violent? Maybe. Too violent for me? Absolutely, and not because there’s blood and guts flying everywhere. It’s because the violence is based in reality — this violence is happening in the world right now — it’s not fake.

Rambo star Sylvester Stallone, who also directed and co-wrote the film, states that his purpose in setting this fourth installment in Burma (currently known as Myanmar) was to expose the mass atrocities of the lengthy civil war raging there. Well, consider me exposed. Unfortunately, I’m sure most of the people watching this film either thought it was just another bad-ass action flick or, rather, another over-the-top action flick.

And, at it’s heart, that’s what it is. When going to see a movie like this, you have to take it at that — simply, an ACTION flick. If you walk away with more from it, that’s great. Otherwise, don’t try to dissect it for its acting merits, don’t shred it for its seemly preposterous plot line, don’t knock it for all its graphic violence, and definitely don’t be shocked at the actions of its hero — there’s a reason he’s there: to save the day by any means possible!

Like I said in the beginning, it was a bit too violent for me — I don’t get off on seeing innocent people raped, tortured, and killed. It’s not my thing. But boy do I love it when a good-guy action hero opens up a can o’ whup ass on the baddies. (Hey, they had it coming.) It makes me wish there really was a one-man Rambo army out there to save the oppressed, tortured victims of the world.
