G.I. Joe: Retaliation

A few years ago I, like many, wouldn’t have thought a second G.I. Joe movie to be a likelihood. While G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was a spazztastic joy-bomb of a movie that bled pure, unadulterated fun from its pores, it wasn’t quite the moneymaker that Hasbro’s other big screen franchise brand, Transformers, had become. But after three years it looks like we’re getting a sequel to The Rise of Cobra, and not only does G.I. Joe: Retaliation look a lot better than its predecessor but it appears that director Jon M. Chu (Step Up 3D) and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland), along with a mighty cast, have made a real-as-rhubarb G.I. Joe movie.

The movie isn’t due in theaters until this summer but in the past two months the studio has released a teaser trailer and Super Bowl spot that both garnered positive reaction, something that the early trailers for The Rise of Cobra couldn’t quite accomplish and thus hurt its chances at the box office.

Today Paramount Pictures and MGM have released an international trailer for the movie. You can watch it here below.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

The first trailer for Paramount/MGM’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the long-mooted sequel to 2009’s, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, has been released today and you can check it out here below.

While The Rise of Cobra didn’t bring in the beaucoup bucks the Transformers franchise has been reaping, that didn’t stop the studio from putting a sequel into production. Stephen Sommers, the director of Rise, was not offered the job of helming Retaliation. Instead the reigns were handed to Jon M. Chu, whose previous credits include…Step Up 2 the Streets, Step Up 3D, and the recent concert movie Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the screenplay.

Zombieland

It’s being reported that Fox Broadcasting, along with Sony Pictures Television, is developing a new TV series based on the hit 2009 horror–comedy, Zombieland, with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick involved as well.

The movie starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as survivors of the zombie apocalypse who cross paths on their way to different destinations.

For those who don’t know, CBS initially ordered a pilot episode of a Zombieland series back in 2005 but that eventually fell through, opening the door for a movie which went on to become a surprise hit, bringing in over $100 million in worldwide box office.

‘Die Hard’ Star Bruce Willis In Talks To Play Original Joe In ‘G.I. Joe 2’

The first G.I. Joe movie, The Rise of Cobra, was pretty awful. A lot of people seemed to like it for some inexplicable reason, but a guilty pleasure is a guilty pleasure, and that one is getting a sequel.

Interestingly enough, it appears that pretty much everyone who was in Rise of Cobra, won’t be in G.I. Joe 2, which is titled G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The only returning stars will be Channing Tatum, who plays Duke, the fan–favorite, Snake Eyes (played by Ray Park), and Byung-hun Lee, who plays Storm Shadow.

But, if all goes to plan, a massive Hollywood star will be one of the newcomers cast to try and help it survive the loss of talents like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller, Dennis Quaid, and Rachel Nichols. It’s being reported that none other than Bruce Willis is in talks for a role, and it’s a fairly significant one at that.
