Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here

Pink Floyd‘s Wish You Were Here is on sale today in MP3 format from Amazon for only $3.99.

The album, which was their follow up to their enormously successful 1973 release Dark Side of the Moon, is almost as revered by fans of the group as Dark Side is. Originally released in September 1975 and going to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and around the world, Wish You Were Here explores themes similar to Dark Side: alienation, confusion, longing, mental breakdown, and also even dissention in the music business. It’s also a tribute of sorts to one of their founding members, the late Syd Barrett, who had left the band a few years earlier due to mental illness. The long track “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” is a recorded nod to their fallen member, who had also made a few unannounced appearances in the studio when they were recording the album. That track opens and closes the record. The other tracks are equally memorable as well, the sing-a-long dark, doomy title track of longing and hope; “Welcome to the Machine” with its spacey, synthesized feel; and “Have A Cigar,” with guest vocals by Roy Harper and which actually sounds rather upbeat and contrasts the rest of the record nicely, acting as almost a rest stop between all the amazing heaviness and rocking ambiance which bookends it. Every record Pink Floyd released during the 1970s is essential and Wish You Were Here is no exception. A must.

WrightPink Floyd founding member Richard Wright is off to play in that great gig in the sky.

The keyboardist and songwriter of the iconic rock band died today at his home in Britain after battling cancer. He was 65.

Wright formed Pink Floyd in 1965 along with Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and the late Syd Barrett. Together the foursome made their recording debut with 1967’s jazz-influenced psychedelic rock album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which contained “Astronomy Dominé,” co-sung by Wright.

Pink Floyd went on to achieve great commercial success and critical acclaim with over a dozen records, including the now-classic albums Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. It was during the recording sessions for the latter album that Wright had a falling out with bassist/frontman Roger Waters leading to his forced resignation in 1980 as a full member of the band. He retained the role of session and touring musician during the album’s promotion, but did not appear on the band’s follow-up album, The Final Cut (which turned out to be its last with Rogers).
