Tyler Perry

A fan of Tyler Perry, but don’t like to watch him direct a film? Then 2012 will apparently be your year. Or at least this October will be a far more interesting month for you.

According to ComingSoon, Summit has announced that their upcoming film, Alex Cross, will hit theaters on October 26. The film stars Perry, Matthew Fox, Rachel Nichols, and Ed Burns, and follows the story of a “homicide detective/psychologist (Perry) as he meets his match in a serial killer (Fox). The two face off in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, but when the mission gets personal, Cross is pushed to the edge of his moral and psychological limits in this taut and exciting action thriller.”

Remember back in March when we found out that Paramount Pictures was remaking beloved ’80s favorite The Monster Squad and we all hoped that that would be the last we ever heard of it? It looks as if it’s not only happening, but this could just be the start.

It’s being reported that cousins Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn have been hired to write the screenplay for the movie, and that there are hopes that this could develop into a possible franchise. The Gunn cousins haven’t done a whole lot yet, but they did pen Bring it On Again, James Gunn’s (director of Slither and Brian’s brother) PG Porn, and the upcoming sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, which is being called Journey to the Mysterious Island.

‘Twas Only A Matter Of Time: Paramount To Remake ‘The Monster Squad’

The Monster Squad

Deadline Hollywood is reporting something that many have expected for a long while now, but it is no less painful to read. That’s right, Paramount Pictures has decided to remake the 1987 childhood classic, The Monster Squad.

If the project does indeed happen, Rob Cohen, who was a producer and executive producer on the original movie, already has high hopes to direct the remake. Considering that he’s emotionally attached to the old movie, you would think that he would be an ideal candidate to create a faithful reproduction here, but this might not be the case. Cohen does have plenty of directing experience since then, but with his credits including Dragonheart, The Skulls, The Fast and the Furious, xXx, Stealth, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, most Monster Squad die hards will shudder in fear at the thought.

See Bruce Willis & Tracy Morgan In The Trailer For Kevin Smith’s ‘Cop Out’

Cop Out

The brand new first teaser trailer for Kevin Smith‘s Cop Out has been officially released on Apple (head there for HD!). The movie is one with an interesting bunch of sub-plots that have nothing to do with the actual film. For starters: the movie was known for a long time as A Couple of Dicks; a title most people enjoyed, but which Warner Brothers dubbed too edgy, and had changed to the rather fitting Cop Out. Secondly: this is the first movie that Smith did not write and produce as well. He was hired to simply direct the film, and that is all. Even though this took Smith away from his normal comfortable world, the hope is that with stars like Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan playing off of each other, a comedy success can be achieved.

I’m a big Kevin Smith fan and haven’t met a movie of his that I didn’t love yet…not one. And while we don’t yet know if Cop Out will end up playing really well or very badly, I must say it: you can definitely tell this flick wasn’t written by Smith just by viewing the trailer. Whether you love him like I do or despise his work, the Clerks, Dogma, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno writer/director/producer is known for his writing skills and tremendous attention to dialogue quality. That relentless and witty dialogue would appear to be completely vacant here, and that would be my first concern.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Two Disc Deluxe Edition
Directed by Rob Cohen
Starring Brendan Frasier, Jet Li, Maria Bello, John Hannah, Luke Ford, Michelle Yeoh, Isabella Leong
Universal Home Entertainment
Release Date: December 16, 2008

The third installment of The Mummy series is sure not to disappoint. Well, one thing is disappointing and I have to say it right from the beginning. What happened to the real Evelyn O’Connell? I really hate to start a review like this. I like to tell a bit about the movie and then give my feelings, but I couldn’t, and I am sure you won’t be able to. It’s not that Maria Bello (Thank You for Smoking, A History of Violence) is bad in her depiction of Evelyn, it’s just that, Rachel Weisz is our Evelyn. Maybe Weisz’s decision to do Definitely, Maybe or My Blueberry Nights blocked her from The Mummy project. If it did, I have one thing to say: she should have stuck with The Mummy series. No judgments on the other two movies, but, you get my drift.

In The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, a new kind of mummy is released, Emperor Han (Jet Li), by mistake of course, and it is up to Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn, along with their now-adult son Alex (Luke Ford) and Evelyn’s brother John (John Hannah) to save the world from complete enslavement.

The Mummy franchise has yet to disappoint me and Rob Cohen does not do so now. In the interest of not giving away everything in the movie, I am keeping my review short, but I will go in detail about this DVD edition’s many bonus features.
