If you were watching the Grammy Awards tonight, then you might have caught the preview of the newest trailer for Disney’s Maleficent, the live-action backstory of their animated classic, Sleeping Beauty.

In the trailer, you can hear “Once Upon A Dream” sung by Lana Del Rey for the film’s soundtrack. Maleficent, opens in theaters on May 30, 2014, features Angelina Jolie as the famed title villainess and also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville.

The $11 t-shirt deal of the day over at TeeFury today is called “Once Upon a Dream” by khallion and is inspired by Doctor Who and Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

Angelina Jolie made an appearance today at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA at the live-action panel for the exclusive first look from her upcoming film, Disney’s Maleficent. A description of the footage is located at the end of this post.

Jolie wowed the crowd at D23, as they erupted upon her entrance, when she joined Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, on stage. Bailey said that the filmmakers only wanted one name for this role, as they felt Jolie would be a perfect fit. Yes, she is ideal, oozing chills and vivacity in the role. Bailey also showcased some artwork of the castle and woods.

Audiences may find themselves “rooting for the other side,” Bailey indicated, in that the story from Maleficent’s perspective will give new insight into the popular Disney villain.

As expected, we’re in the middle of a rush of fairy tale-inspired movies. From Snow White and the lands of Oz, to Peter Pan and Jack and the Beanstalk, they’ve all got projects on the way. Most of them have multiple new takes on the stories coming from various studios.

Another fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, also has new versions of the story on the the way, but producer Neal Moritz wants to take it in a completely different direction.

Moritz wants to take the Sleeping Beauty fable and turn it into a psycho stalker comedy. Why not!
