Apple TV Plus

Apple has unveiled Apple TV+, their very own subscription-based streaming service. This is a huge moment for the tech giant, which will now be entering the ring with the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu to deliver original content from some of the best storytellers. Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, M. Night Shyamalan, Ron Howard, Octavia Spencer, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Sofia Coppola, Reese Witherspoon, Hailee Steinfeld, and Damien Chazelle are among those who already have titles on the way which will be available exclusively on Apple TV+.

Though a lot of the details on what we could see are still limited, a pair of preview videos show us what to expect from the streaming service. Check out the videos below.

Movie Review: Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled (2017) starring Nicole Kidman

The Beguiled
Director: Sofia Coppola
Screenwriter: Sofia Coppola
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Colin Farrell
Distributor: Focus Features
Rated R | 94 Minutes
Release Date: June 23, 2017

Sofia Coppola‘s first short film, 1998’s Lick the Star, follows a clique of teenage girls led by Chloe, who is obsessed with V.C. Andrews’ novel, Flowers in the Attic. Chloe orchestrates a plan with her girl gang to “weaken” the boys they don’t like at their school by poisoning their lunches with arsenic. The 14-minute black and white 16mm short film shows early signs of Coppola’s fascination with the themes of isolation and identity, sexual awakening, and the trauma of adolescence.

Since then, Coppola has explored these ideas in the 18th, 20th, and 21st centuries with Marie Antoinette, The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Somewhere, and The Bling Ring. Now, the writer-director journeys to the 19th century with The Beguiled, a remake of the 1971 film of the same name, based on the 1966 Southern Gothic novel, A Painted Devil, by Thomas P. Cullinan.

Sofia Coppola

Last year it was announced that Sofia Coppola was on board to direct a live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid over at Universal. Since then, news on the production of the film has been slow going, to a point where many had forgotten about the project. Well now comes word that Coppola is dropping out due to “creative differences” and “casting issues.”

Both Deadline cited the creative differences, while Variety says there was a disagreement with casting. According to them, the Lost In Translation director wanted Maya Thurman Hawke, daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, to play the role of Ariel. This choice did not sit well with Universal and Working Title. Joe Wright (Pan, Anna Karenina) was actually on the shortlist of possible directors, but he is currently in talks to direct The Lifeboat, which is another project over at Focus Features (Universal’s indie company) and Working Title.
