Michael Fassbender The Snowman trailer

The Snowman
Director: Tomas Alfredson
Screenwriter: Hossein Amini, Peter Straughan
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, Toby Jones, David Dencik, James D’Arcy, J.K. Simmons
Distributor: Universal Pictures
Rated R | 119 Minutes
Release Date: October 20, 2017

A good mystery thriller has us on the edge of our seats and has us convinced we know who the criminal is at some point in the movie only to realize it wasn’t who we thought it was. It builds upon itself with great characters giving more than terrific performances. And it has a story that keeps us engaged for the entire duration.

But Tomas Alfredson‘s adaptation of Jo Nesbø‘s The Snowman is anything but the aforementioned qualities. It is sporadic, horribly paced, and lacks any sort of structure. Instead, we are given a fairly predictable film that feels like it was just piled on top of each other trying to pass itself off as a decent movie. My full review below.

Rebecca Ferguson

It seems that Rebecca Ferguson‘s names keeps popping up on casting shortlists. Casting directors have been keeping an eye on the actress ever since her scene stealing performance in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. In the past few months she was attached to play the female lead in Gambit – which ultimately went to Lea Seydoux (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Spectre) – and decided to take a pass so that she could star alongside Emily Blunt, and possibly Chris Evans and Jared Leto, in Tate Taylor”˜s adaptation of Paula Hawkins”˜ The Girl on the Train. She is also rumored to be in the running for Marvel Studios’ adaptation of Captain Marvel, which is three years away from release.

The number of offers alone shows that Ferguson is in high demand, and now her stock is about to increase, as new reports are coming out that are saying she is wanted for Alien: Paradise Lost and The Snowman. More on these stories below.

Michael Fassbender

Universal Pictures and Working Title are now in talks with Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) to direct The Snowman, but the biggest news is that the two are also in talks with Michael Fassbender to star in the lead role, Harry Hole, a detective who investigates the disappearance of a young boy’s mother when the pink scarf that he gave her suddenly appears on a snowman. His investigation leads him to believe that Norway may have their first serial killer.

Hole has been described as brilliant and driven detective with unorthodox methods, a classic loose cannon in the police force. He is also a heavy smoker and an alcoholic. The film will be an adaptation of Jo Nesbø‘s novel of the same name, which is actually the seventh book in the Harry Hole novel series.

Scorsese

Nothing says Martin Scorsese quite like the crime thriller genre.

According to THR, the filmmaker will be returning to the genre that he helped revolutionize with the upcoming film, The Snowman. Based on a Norwegian novel of the same name from writer Jo Nesbo, the film will follow the story of a son who “finds his mother’s pink scarf wrapped around the neck of an ominous looking snowman. Hole realizes she is the latest victim of a serial killer.” The book is the seventh in the Harry Hole franchise.
