Timothy Zahn returns with his denouement in his new canon trilogy of tales about Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn titled Star Wars: Thrawn: Treason.

In it, Grand Admiral Thrawn butts heads with Director Orson Krennic over project funding. Thrawn believes the future of the Empire, at least in the years leading up to Episode IV: A New Hope, is his TIE Defender project. Krennic, on the other hand, is certain the Empire can only hope to survive if his Stardust* project even if it has been delayed and run a bit over budget.

Ever since the 1991 release of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire, I have maintained that Grand Admiral Thrawn could be the best bad guy to ever grace the Star Wars universe. Even badder than Darth Vader. After author Timothy Zahn closed out the Thrawn trilogy of books – which also includes Dark Force Rising and The Last Command – I have been chomping on the bit for more Thrawn love.

Not only did I get no additional love, I had what I’d grown to love practically ripped out from under me as Thrawn and all the other characters introduced in the Expanded Universe of books and comics were declared non-canon by Lucasfilm. I was heartbroken.

New Star Wars Novel Puts The Usual Suspects In A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Timothy Zahn returns yet again to the Star Wars universe, with a new publication to be released at the end of this year focusing on Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian. Entitled Star Wars: Scoundrels, the book will be released on Boxing Day, which is December 26.

Zahn’s new adventure is essentially a heist/crime story, which is an awesome idea, as this concept has never been explored in the Expanded Star Wars Universe. Picture this: mixing up the stories of Ocean’s Eleven, The Usual Suspects, and The Italian Job, and chucking them all into the backdrop of the Star Wars galaxy… Sold on the idea yet? I can tell you with absolute certainty that I am.

The Expanded Universe has been advancing sub-genre stories like this for a few years now, the best known being Deathtroopers, mixing up Horror and Zombie stories into Star Wars lore. This year’s Darth Plagueis played more like a Godfather-esque tale inside the context of Sith lineage; and the recent Dark Horse comic book series Agent Of The Empire captures the Bourne/007 spy genre wonderfully.

Star Wars: Heir To The Empire

Today will be a day long remembered for Star Wars fans, particularly for enthusiasts of the Expanded Universe: LucasBooks has released their Star Wars: Heir to the Empire: The 20th Anniversary Edition written by Timothy Zahn. The novel has long been an enduring fixture in the reading collections not only of Star Wars fans, but also for general readers of Sci-Fi as well. Zahn contributed a significant first chapter in the beginning of a journey that would continue expanding the cosmos of Star Wars.

Originally released in 1991, Heir to the Empire was the first part of The Thrawn Trilogy. Set five years after Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, the Rebel Alliance has claimed Coruscant and instituted the New Republic. Meanwhile, the remnants of the Empire have coalesced under the strategic genius and foresight of Grand Admiral Thrawn, placing the Imperial Forces under the strongest direction it has had since the fall of Palpatine and Vader, and becoming a new menace to the infancy of the New Republic.
