Remastered ‘Sandman’ Volumes 1-3 Available Now; ‘Annotated Sandman’ On The Way

Sandman Volume 2I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve written of my love for Neil Gaiman’s work, especially his Sandman comic book series, which is why I’m excited that today the first three special edition volumes of Sandman were released. And if that wasn’t awesome enough, there’s also news that an annotated Sandman is also in the works!

The new trade paperback special editions feature recolored artwork — the same treatment given to the Absolute Editions — as well as new covers and other upgrades from their original publication, which began in 1989.

The remaining volumes of the series, which are published by DC’s Vertigo imprint, will have the same remastering treatment in the future, but no dates for those have been announced.

If you already own the entire series, you might be wondering if the new editions with recolored artwork are worth the cost of a repurchase. If you check out Vertigo’s blog, you can see a few comparison samples between the original and recolored art. Also, below is an excerpt from Gaiman’s blog from 2006 in response to a fan questioning the recoloring on the Absolute Editions.

Revolver
Hardcover
By Matt Kindt
Vertigo Comics
Release Date July 14, 2010

Are you looking for the next Asterios Polyp, I Kill Giants, or Essex County to enjoy? Well I found that book for you and it’s called Revolver. Revolver comes to you from the acclaimed author of 3 Story: The Secret History of the Giant Man and Super Spy: The Lost Dossiers, Matt Kindt. If you haven’t read anything by Kindt, then you should definitely check something out. Kindt is one of my favorite authors and is great with creator-owned material.

Revolver is an original graphic novel about a character named Sam whose life is somehow split into two different realities. One life is normal and filled with routine, while the other is set in a post-apocalyptic world where he has to fight to survive. One of the most interesting parts of the story is how Sam deals with the worlds and how his psyche deals with it as well. The story definitely has a lot of twists and turns and I definitely don’t want to spoil the book for anyone by revealing any further details.

Death Is Coming to ‘Action Comics’ This Fall

By Jedi of Doom

Comic book fans will be surprised this October with the release of Action Comics #894.

The issue will have a guest appearance by the character Death from Neil Gaiman‘s beloved Vertigo comic book series Sandman.

According to DC Comics, Action Comics writer Paul Cornell thought of the idea himself to bring Death into the issue and then got approval by Gaiman, who he said has been supportive of bringing Death and Lex Luthor face to face. This big move is part of a huge story arc for Action Comics where Lex Luthor will not only go against people he is used to, but other characters he has never met before.

DC had very limited information about the storyline, but they did reassure that way they use Death “will be true to the spirit of what has gone before.”

Demo #5 (of 6)
Written by: Brian Wood
Art & Cover by: Becky Cloonan
Letters by: Jared K. Fletcher
Vertigo
Price: $2.99
Release Date: June 3, 2010

Brian Wood is a master at characterization. I don’t know what it is about him, but he seems to be able to capture the essence of a character in one issue where it takes many others entire trades to accomplish the same. This is best seen in his series Demo and is definitely captured in the latest issue titled “Stranded.” Not only is the characterization spot-on in this issue, but it also gives the main character a power that I love: time travel.

The story covers Elisabeth, who is very different and alone for more than one reason. As I mentioned before, she has the power to time travel, but the other reason is a little more real to life. Elisabeth’s problem caused her to have problems with her father and leads her to make decisions she regrets later in life, but that’s okay because she has decided to change all of that using her power.
