‘Watchmen’ Extended Trailer + Possible Alternate Ending Details

Empress Eve   |  @   |

WatchmenDirector Zack Snyder and members of the Watchmen cast made an appearance last night at the Spike TV 2008 Scream Awards, where they offered up an extended movie trailer for the highly anticipated film.

Watch the video of it here below.

In other Watchmen news, a test screening of the film was held in Portland last week supposedly for people not familiar with the comic book its adapted film. Reports from the screening, as well as from previous ones held in Los Angeles, were positive.

But, there’s been new information reported regarding the film’s ending, so here comes the spoiler warning.

Mind you, these reports have not been officially confirmed and were originally posted on an IMDb message board, but were quickly removed. Even so, if you don’t want to know anything about the ending of the film, read no further.

SPOILER

According to the reports, the climax of the graphic novel where Veidt releases his squid in New York City, was not in the movie. Instead, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias builds a machine that mimics Dr Manhattan’s powers and uses it to set off atomic bomb like explosions in various cities around the world. [Source: /Film]

Apparently, the alternate ending is a surprise, as other reports had said that the squid was included and cast members had previously mentioned the squid being a part of the film’s climax.

For those of you familiar with the original ending in the Alan Moore/Dave Gibbon’s graphic novel, what do you think of this supposed new ending for the film?

END SPOILER

  1. As much as it pains me to say it, every bit of news and footage that comes out for Watchmen convinces me a bit more that this movie is being done completely wrong. I love the look of the trailers, but they are totally inappropriate for the work they’re depicting.

  2. i agree with noah.

i just cant tolerate any change to this story. even if alan moore himself changed the ending, i’d still not be happy.

  3. Explosions? Too impersonal. Not good. The revelation that he had already bombed New York — with a home-made “Alien” — made me go “Oh My God!” out loud while reading. Then when you turned the page, the 2 page spread of death and destruction in New York made me say “Ph my God!” out loud again! Then i sat and looked at the spread for 5 minutes (and you can find many central characters in it). If the movie could have a 10th this effect, it has to be included.

  4. WHAT.
    WHAT.
    WHAT?!
Okay, this actually upsets me. I thought that the whole squid-alien ending of the graphic novel was just so random and unexpected, that it made it nearly perfect.
This ending, however, sounds really disappointing. Maybe I’m just too critical.

We’ll see how it plays out in the movie.

  5. random+unexpected = perfect?

    no

i think with the old ending audiences would end up saying “it was cool until the giant squid WTF was that about”

  6. random+unexpected=perfect=yes

the whole point of the squid was to be something so horrifying and bizarre that it scared the world into peace. after all who would want to fight when there’s a threat of monsters appearing at random and killing most people(or making them go crazy and kill their babies and god knows what else).

a bomb would have to come from another country therefore peace would not be achieved. dr. manhattan is still associated with america so I don’t see how that would make russia want to work with us. it would just be a really stupid plan. the squid at least worked for a while.

I’ve given up on the movie being a faithful adaptation, I just want to see it because it looks cool.

  7. I’m a huge fan of the graphic novel and can not wait for this movie to come out! I’ve been following the production notes and read reviews from people who saw the special screening and am extremely impressed so far. All that said, this is the first piece of news that disappointments me and makes me a little upset. To fans of the comic and without giving to much away, the ending is what made the story. So changing the end changes the entire story. If this is like I Am Legend where it has both endings in the DVD thats fine. I really want the original ending for the movie though, and i hope this is just a rumor.

  8. Do you people seriously think they’ll take out the squid? Rumors always pop up for movies, always. I remember looking at another site like this talking about the trailer and how the explosion replaced the squid. Well if those “faithful fans” remembered correctly they would know there was an explosion, then you see the squid. This movie is going to be perfect, quit whining about every detail.

  9. Hi! Im a watchmen fan from Costa Rica!
Well im very worried if this is all true but if u really look at both endings not too deeply youll notice that even if that squid stuff is really weird it COULD work for normal audiences. But I think that knowing how important is Dr. M. to USA dont you think that an atomic explotion from America´s God would unite all countries against one man? One American man??? The squid is weird but the Dr. M. stuff is senseless

  10. Well I just came back from the movies, having watched the ending. Luckily I hadn’t read up on it before hand so didn’t have it spoiled. And yes I was very surprised (having read the comic awhile back) however frankly, I find it suiting. With the resting plot it doesn’t make a dramatic difference and with the rest of the movie… a giant squid would have been misplaced.

The fact that Dr. Manhattan leaves the milky way galaxy anyways causes the ‘blamed’ explosions not to matter so much.

Overall I have to say it was a very well written ending for an already long movie (2h46mins). You have to realize you can’t put EVERYTHING in the movie, and the squid would have been too much to explain, though I did tell my friends after the movie ^^.

Frankly, great movie, Zack Snyder doesn’t disappoint as it is a gorgeous movie to watch. Just if your gonna watch it subtitled in another language… wait for the DVD. My friends found it tough to follow. But wonderful movie that I really enjoyed.

  11. I’ve just seen the film (literally) and a few people have told me it is a bit pants – making my own mind up i think it was great. I never read the book so went into it with an open mind. The ending just clicked and for me was the icing on the cake and a good step away from the usual ‘happy ending’ fare found in most comic book adaptations.
I can understand how some purists will feel aggrieved as the ending has been changed so drastically however as quite often the case is, making a comic book adaptation too close to the original is hard if not impossible and often doesn’t result in a great movie.
In this adaptation i was impressed and captivated. Well done.
