The Amazing Spider-Man may not have been the most well received movie amongst critics, but it did earn enough to garner two sequels.
So with the movie already moving forward with a draft written by James Vanderbilt and rewrites to be penned byStar Trek scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the only thing Sony needs to do is get director Marc Webb back in the chair for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But this could prove to be difficult because of a few contractual obligations.
Call it obstacles, difficulties, or problems, but Webb might not be able to return to the director’s chair. According to a report from THR, Webb is obligated to head back to direct a feature over at Fox, since they were the studio who financed and distributed (500) Days of Summer. Basically, since Fox gave him their hand, Webb must return the favor.
Like most critics, Famous Monster (read his review here) loved how Webb explored the relationship aspect of the film. But the problem I had with it was that there were some huge plot holes that could not go unnoticed. Still, it’s not like the film was a complete disaster, it did break a few box office records, and there definitely will be a trilogy.
Webb has a handle on how to tell a great love story and to continue that on with a different director would probably hurt The Amazing Spider-Man 2. So let’s hope that Webb gets another chance to continue the story.
