UPDATE: We’ve learned that the title for the reboot will simply be Hellboy, the same as the original 2004 film.
It’s being reported that Lionsgate is in the final stages of negotiations to distribute the Hellboy reboot, titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.
The movie already has a star and director set. David Harbour, who is one of the stars of Netflix’s Stranger Things, is set to take over the role of Hellboy; while Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) will direct. The original 2004 movie adaptation and its 2008 sequel, Hellboy: The Golden Army, starred Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy, Blade II) in the title role with Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak) directing.
When it was first announced that Harbour and Marshall were attached to a reboot of the Hellboy franchise, it was said that Millennium Films was in negotiations to distribute. But for whatever reason that didn’t play out and it looks like it’ll be a Lionsgate project.
Interestingly enough, Lionsgate would be the third different distributor for the franchise. The original was distributed by Columbia Pictures, while The Golden Army was from Universal Pictures.
Just last week, some fans of del Toro and Perlman’s originals who were skeptical of the reboot were surely won over when it was revealed that the new movie would actually be an R-rated adaptation with as many practical effects as possible.
Director Marshall shared that news, saying they had the greenlight to go all-out. And with the source material being “kind of bloody” as he put it, they were going to embrace that and make the movie they want to make. He also noted that it obviously helped that R-rated comic book movies like Deadpool and Logan did so well.
The screenplay for Hellboy is being written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, Eureka creator Andrew Cosby, and Christopher Golden.
