NYCC: ‘Moonlight’ Panel

Empress Eve   |  @   |

MoonlightHey, do you guys know about a television show on CBS called Moonlight?

Because before today, I certainly didn’t. Then I saw the massive amounts of diehard fans of the show who were waiting to get into the IGN Theater at the New York Comic Con this morning, I figured I’d check out the Moonlight panel to see what all the fuse was about.

Let me start off by saying thanks to these fans of this supernatural vampire drama, most of whom can be found on the Moonlight Fans board, for educating me about the series before the event started. You guys certainly got my attention!

I also must mention that after sitting through panel after panel at the Con on Friday and Saturday, none of the fan reaction compares in intensity to the Moonlight crowd. It’s rivaled possibly only by The X-Files crowd, but it’s too close to call.

As I mentioned before, I’ve never even heard of the show; I don’t know what it’s about, or who stars in it. Luckily, the panel began with a 12-minute clip of highlights from Moonlight, which gave me a good idea about the show, and I must admit, I liked what I saw.

And guess who’s in it? One Jason Dohring who played Logan on Veronica Mars. Awesome! He plays Josef Kostan, an over 400-year-old vampire who is the friend and mentor to the show’s star, newcomer Alex O’Loughlin.

Australian actor Alex O’Loughlin, who bares a striking resemblance to Hugh Jackman, stars as Mick St. John, a private investigator who was turned into a vampire by his bride Coraline on their wedding night over fifty years ago.

Also starring in the show is Sophia Myles (High School Confidential) as the human Beth Turner, an internet reporter who’s St. John’s love interest, and Shannyn Sossamon (One Missed Call) as Coraline Duvall, St. John’s former wife and creator.

In the clip, I noticed a few familiar faces in the supporting cast, too, and after doing some research on the show, I see that the executive producers are Joel Silver and David Greenwalt, co-creator of Angel.

Moonlight has yet to be picked up for a second season, and there’s still four more episodes for the first season to be aired starting April 25, 2008. Apparently, this series was a victim of the writers’ strike, so it’s uncertain if it will return. People from CBS were in attendance at the panel, so if they pay attention to the fans, I’d think the show will return.

But there’s always the chance that Moonlight might go the way of cult favorites like Firefly and Jericho. Thought, instead of 20 tons of peanuts, CBS might get gallons of blood.

By the way, most of the Q&A session involved questions like “What color are your eyes?” and the like, but for fans who couldn’t make it to the Con for this, there was one question everyone in attendance wanted to know the answer to: Will Mick and Beth be sealing the deal?

O’Loughlin’s response: “I think that they are going to do that.”

  1. Thanks for the great re-cap! Many of us couldn’t make it to NY for ComicCon, but are excited about attending the Paley Center tribute to Moonlight this coming Tuesday evening (4/22)in LA. Already, we’re getting reports in on the fanboards such as Moonlightline.com from all the fans that were there in NY.

Glad to hear you’re now a fan! (You’ve been ‘turned’!)

  2. Hello Empress Eve ~

Thank you so much for your fab report from Moonlight’s panel :) Many people would just ignore something they had never heard of… glad you are not like that!

I am proud to hear that you were treated well by the fans. Not surprised tho cuz I have found my fellow Moonlight fans to be a generous, thoughtful & fun bunch. We are always ready & willing to talk to others about our show.

No other show has ever compelled me to leave comments all over the Internet, contact a network repeatedly, correspond with critics/reviewers & even start my own blog dedicated to it. Moonlight definitely has me under its spell :)

Oooooo…. one note…. David Greenwalt left Moonlight early on due to personal reasons. In addition to being a producer, he also wrote episode #2, Out of the Past.

    XO ~

  4. Thanks so much for listening to the enthusiastic Moonlight fans at the Con! We are so glad you did and decided to check out this exciting show. I am another one that could not attend due to being located in Virginia so I am very much appreciative of any and all news regarding the event.

We are definitely glad to have another fan join our ranks. Moonlight fans are definitely a “rabid” group of fans and are loyal, dedicated and determined to proclaim our love for this show and it’s cast and crew. I am a daily active member of the Moonlightfans.com board and also check out Moonlight-Detective.com and Moonlightline.com regularly. This is the first show that has caused me to post comments on every article/interview about the show that I can find, join fan forums and constantly promote the show to friends and family. My son and husband both say I am obsessed with the show!

I am having fun and have met a great group of people with Moonlight fans that care about others and want to do something about it. There are Red Cross blood drives going on across the country in honor of Moonlight, you will also find details on monetary drives for food banks and the Red Cross at Moonlightfans.com and Moonlight-United.com (a fan site created by three of the top fan boards, Moonlightfans.com, Moonlight-Detective.com and Moonlightline.com). Please take some time to head over to these web sites and check out the fun!

AND, be sure to tune in to CBS on Friday night at 9pm for the first new episode since January! Don’t forget to tell your friends and family. It really is a great show and Alex O’Loughlin is such a charismatic guy that you can’t help but be drawn into his character, Mick St. John. I know you’ll be hooked too if you give it a chance! Happy Moonlighting!

  7. I soooo wasnt aware that people knew about moonlight i thought i was the only one so in love with the show!!! noone i know knew about it! I think the reason why i like it so much is the romance is perfect… not to mention mick… yet theres action… but its always in the most rightous way possible… and also theres less clichés than in other series… sometimes like in their arguments… things arent clear… its soooo good! i am so happy their might be another season altought i think the first season is self sufficient… im gonna watch it as often as i used to watch dirty dancing! its like a never ending movie!! anyz, if you can watch them episodes!

    ahhhh i want a mick!!!
    xx
