Yes, I, along with many other children of the ’80s, loved me some Fraggle Rock. None of us knew what the shit they were, but they were awesome and they hung out with little Doozer dudes and ate all their construction materials between adventures to “outer space” where the old guy (who played the bartender with tourettes syndrome in The Boondock Saints named Doc, same as his character in Fraggle Rock, oh and who is already rumored for the movie on IMDB) hung out with his dog, OR to the other side where those gigantic puppets tried to catch and eat our beloved Fraggles. *Inhale* Good. *Exhale* Good! THAT is my recollection of Fraggle Rock, a show which I loved dearly, but do not remember much of the specifics of, given I was 2-6 years old when it was on HBO (Entourage circa 1983?).
Now comes word through Variety that after the successful sales of the first three seasons of the show on DVD, The Weinsteins have decided to give us a picture film! Cory Edwards (Hoodwinked) is writing and directing, which upsets a lot of people — I didn’t hate Hoodwinked, so we’ll see what happens. The Jim Henson Company with Lisa Henson and Brian Henson will produce the film and The Weinstein Co. will pack it up and ship it out.
My immediate first concern was that they would turn all of the Fraggles into CG travesty’s, but apparently — God bless ’em for trying — they want to stick with the human/puppet combo recipe that worked so well for the show, hence the Hensons being involved. I’m sure if they proposed CG use, ol’ Jim Henson would have come back with some old school spiritual vengeance on the Weinstein boys.
Now the big concern is, can they still dance here and now in the modern day with the old formula? They’re making a new Muppet movie, but the Muppets are a whole other level than the Fraggles, so it may be a challenge for them. I look forward to seeing the effort and hoping it’s as entertaining as the show was for my early years.
Not much in terms of plot; basically the Fraggles are supposedly going to be venturing to outer space and interacting with “aliens,” which are humans. This is what most episodes where, so it’s not really laid out yet. I’m sure it will (it better!) start down in Fraggle Rock, munchin’ on some Doozer sticks, and they’ll go off on some crazy adventure and it’ll be fun stuff.
As you read in the first paragraph, I don’t recall a whole lot from the show, but I peeked at the Fraggle Rock Wiki and anyone who watched it while younger should absolutely check it out! I learned a whole lot more than I ever knew about the show and even learned of a lot of the more adult/serious overtones the show had. Pretty interesting to read!
