More ‘Red Dwarf’ On The Way?

The Movie God   |  @   |

Red DwarfI’ve never seen an episode of Red Dwarf. I don’t even really have a clue what it is, aside from that it’s British and kinda weird looking. But I have a friend who loves it very dearly and it’s pretty popular, so I figured it’s worth sharing this news.

Red Dwarf cast member Robert Llewellyn made an announcement at the KTCS9 20th Anniversary shindig that a new one-hour special has been commissioned by the BBC Worldwide.

No word on the storyline, but the script is in its final stages.

The project should start filming in October 2008.

    And really, really unexpected.

  2. it’s been awhile since i’ve seen red dwarf, but it was funny, my fave ep was when they reached the end of the universe and it was retracting causing everything to go in reverse.

  3. I am sure that after Twenty Years of creating Red Dwarf material they would have enough funny bits to fill an 80 Minute Big Screen Adventure by now

  4. Oh dear Movie God, you geek credentials just took a major hit. Make sure you start watching at the beginning (Episode One: the End). It looks dated now but it has by far the best script.

The last 2 or 3 series lacked the brilliantly sarcastic dialogue of the early ones, and suffered from trying to include as many (frankly shoddy) special FX as possible. Series IV and V probably hit the best balance between dialogue and action.

A feature length episode is an excellent idea. And perhaps the BBC New Dr Who unit can help with the CGI this time.

  5. Eww no. Dr Who CGI is as awful as the show itself. That aside, lets hope this will be better than the last season of red dwarf!

  6. Haha true Justin, but it’s still better than the Red Dwarf CGI…

The last season of Red Dwarf wasn’t great, but at least they tried to take it back to its origins of ‘Lister and Rimmer in a room getting on each other’s nerves’; for some of the time anyway.

  7. this is most excellent news, the only problem lies in how god awful the bbc is at making sci-fi 90% of the time. I hope they dont mess this one up.
