‘Where The Wild Things Are’ Trailer Debuts!

At last word, the trailer for Spike Jonze‘s Where the Wild Things Are was to show up in front of Monsters vs. Aliens, which is opening this Friday. Well, waiting is over-rated! The trailer debuted this morning on Ellen, and you can finally see it here. As we hoped and dreamed, it really does look amazing. The Wild Things look exactly like the Wild Things that we saw as pictures in Maurice Sendak‘s children’s novel, only now, instead of flat on our page, they’re 100% completely alive and real. You get various glimpses at moments of anger, fear, happiness, and playfulness — all those great emotions that shine so brightly when you’re a child. One thing I’m not so big on is the song that they used in the trailer. While the song its self may be good, it just didn’t work for me here with this trailer. I think I always just looked at all of the images and the test footage and imagined the trailer would have some kind of haunting and magical score behind it. Nonetheless, the trailer is fantastic and must be watched immediately. Click over for the trailer or head to Apple for high definition.

DVD Review: The Gene Generation

The Gene Generation
DVD
Directed by Pearry Reginald Teo
Starring Bai Ling, Faye Dunaway
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: January 27, 2009
Usually when I write a review, I try my best to highlight the good and bad of each film. But for a film like The Gene Generation, shit poo is still poo no matter how much you shine it. Now, I know this is a harsh statement to make but bear with me, dear reader. I will have all the answers for you in time but first a little background on the film. Starring Bai Ling, The Gene Generation is set in cliché post-apocalyptic future where hackers are not just breaking into computers anymore: They are breaking into DNA. It seems that in this bleak future a few with a specific type of DNA get to live the high life and for the have-nots, hijacking strands of DNA seems to be the only way to a better life, but it comes with a price. DNA hacking basically kills the victim and those hacking also risk running into assassin for hire and DNA hacker killer Michelle (Bai Ling).

UPDATED! The Destruction Of ‘Let The Right One In’ On DVD

In the past year, a small Swedish film called Let the Right One In has caused waves of high praise among movie fans on the festival circuit. Raves about its originality, darkness, humor, and all-around high level of quality have helped gain the film all kinds of attention. However, news is making its way around the web that the U.S. DVD and Blu-ray versions of the movie have entirely new subtitles written into them. This may sound innocent enough, but if you love foreign movies and know how much better they can be than the movies we’re used to, then you also know how stupid this is. I personally have not seen the movie, but as other sites cover this and I’m able to see what’s going on, it’s something that needs to be seen by as many people as possible, so I’m just doing my part. It’s appalling that anyone would take another person’s art and just slaughter it like this. Being someone who was very much excited to see this movie because of all the praise that it has received, I now find myself wondering how I’ll get to see the actual movie and not this… other thing. Click over for a sample of what the little “adjustments” look like for yourself.
