USA Today has received the first image of Russell Crowe as the title character in Ridely Scott‘s Robin Hood. The image isn’t the most exciting of pictures, but being the first look, it’s pretty exciting to finally see what Crowe will look like in the movie. As you can see, he’s got his bow all set and ready, and he appears to be cautiously approaching some kind of prey — maybe a nice deer for the merry men. Click the image at right to see more.
Producer Brian Grazer also spoke to USA Today and had this to say about the new, more realistic Robin:
He doesn’t have the old Robin Hood tights. He’s got armor. He’s very medieval. He looks, if anything, more like he did in Gladiator than anything we’re used to seeing with Robin Hood.
He also spoke on the importance of the movie being made now:
Oddly, it’s a metaphor for today. He’s trying to create equality in a world where there are a lot of injustices. He’s a crusader for the people, trying to reclaim some of the ill-gotten gains of the wealthy. That’s a universal theme.
I really like the look of the picture. After this, I can’t wait to get a look at all of the other characters and better yet, one of those sweet, sweet trailers.
This will be the definitive version of Robin Hood. When Crowe puts himself into a role, he literally becomes his character. Can’t wait to see this one!

At least he’ll have an English accent.
