It looks like gritty street-wise characters will make more appearances in films set during medieval times. While that experiment does not work out so well for some films, it looks like Robin Hood will take a crack at it with their own formula by adding some light-hearted levity and charm.
Lionsgate has released the newest trailer for the film starring Taron Egerton, who learns the ways of thieving from Little John (Jamie Foxx). And we get a better look at the high-stakes heist they will pull off against the Sheriff of Nottingham (Ben Mendelsohn). Check out the full trailer below.
This trailer seems to have all the typical tropes of an origins film. Robin Hood has the potential to be a real hero, but still has a lot to learn. But he is a fast study, as you will quickly see.
There’s also the typical fast-moving assembling weapons shot in the trailer. Because who doesn’t like to see someone put together a crossbow in record time. Joking aside, this does feel a lot like a Batman Begins kind of vibe. You’ve got that charming title character learning his way up the ladder. Proving that he has the skills necessary to be the best thief in the land. And while the training methods may be a bit unconventional and a challenge, it could prove to be quite a great franchise if the first film is successful.
So there is some light-heartedness to this, and Egerton plays up the charming Robin Hood very well. It’s hard not to be swooned by a character with such charisma. But will he be able to fend off the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Mendelsohn? That remains to be seen. But it sure does look like a lot of fun. It’s also some nice counter-programming for those who may not be interested in Oscar-bait films.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) a war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander (Jamie Foxx) mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance.
The film also stars Eve Hewson, Tim Minchin, and Jamie Dornan.
Robin Hood opens on November 21, 2018. Click right here for the previous trailer if you missed it.
