The State

Fans of the show know it and its group very well, but others may not even know it exists. In any case, MTV‘s cult sketch comedy show, The State, will be finally coming to DVD on July 14, 2009. The set is expected to include five discs with every episode, as well as special features including: the pilot episode, outtakes, and over 90 minutes worth of un-aired sketches.

The show was known for its incredibly odd and random humor, which may or may not have cause an awkward feeling in the room once in a while, but always made you laugh hysterically. Some of their best work included things like Muppets, bearded men in space, and one messed up version of The Last Supper. I’m a big fan of the bearded men skit…classic.

After The State, many of its cast went on to shine. A bunch of them write and star as the main characters in Comedy Central’s Reno 911!; Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain went on to star in another sketch comedy show called Stella; Wain also wrote and directed the recent hit, Role Models; and most of the gang reunited to make one f’d up and hilarious little movie called The Ten.

Click over to the other side for a quote from one of the cast members, the official synopsis, as well as the DVD’s trailer!

Here’s what cast member Michael Ian Black had to say about the announcement via his blog:

Is this exciting? I guess so. Here’s my fear about it: people often remember things as being better than they were. The first Thanksgiving, for example. People think, “Oh it was so great.” Guess what? There was too much corn, not enough turkey, and a lot of scarlet fever. I’m definitely not saying getting The State DVD is going to cause scarlet fever, but then again, who’s to say? I mean, medical science has made a lot of advances over the past three hundred years, but they still have no idea what causes scarlet fever (except for the fact that they do know).

Here’s the show’s official synopsis:

“The State” was simply one of the sharpest, funniest and most underrated shows to debut in the 1990’s. Originally created as MTV’s first foray into the sketch comedy genre, “The State” was a comedic gem that rocked Generation X with slapstick, smarts and witty sarcasm. The dynamic cast features 11 exceptional actors that have continued to collaborate on hit projects. EW.com raved “[The State is] the hippest, most accessible, and most consistently funny of the sketch troupes.” MTV’s timeless sketch comedy show, “The State” is finally here!

Lastly, the trailer to enjoy.

  1. AWESOME news!! I remember when The State first came out and being blown away by it’s absurtist sketches — this, with the recent release of “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” completes my wish list of DVDs I’d want to be stranded on a desert island with. With the people involved, the show was truly lightning in a bottle. CAN’T WAIT!!!
