Video: Johnny Depp Marathon On Hulu

Hulu is currently running a Johnny Depp marathon featuring some of his starring films — Benny and Joon, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, and Cry Baby — along with episodes of 21 Jump St, his first break-out television series.

Visit the Hulu movies page to locate the films and to the 21 Jump St page to watch 13 episodes of Season 1 of the TV series.

Benny and Joon, which also stars Aidan Quinn and Mary Stuart Masterson, is embedded here below.

All of Depp’s films up on Hulu are worth a viewing, though my favorite of the bunch is definitely Benny and Joon. Released in 1993, Depp plays Sam, the love interest of Joon (Masterson), a schizophrenic young woman who lives with her older brother Benny (Quinn) who’s given up his life to care for her.

Sam’s a quiet young man who has trouble reading and writing, but he’s a talented street performer with a similar style to Buster Keaton. Joon has her emotional outbursts, but is highly intelligent and artistically gifted. When the two meet, there’s instant chemistry, but their individual situations present problems as they try to have a relationship. Depp pretty much wears a tie, vest, and hat through the entire movie and has the 1990s grunge hairdo — think Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder; matter of fact, to pander to the grunge audience of the time, there’s even a very cute scene of Sam cleaning the house to Temple of the Dog’s “Pushin Forward Back.” You only get a glimpse of Depp in the first 20 minutes of the film, but then he shows up in full force throughout the rest of the movie.

In Fear and Loathing, Depp stars as gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson’s alter ego on his drug-filled escapades in Vegas; 1986’s Cry Baby is a John Waters 1950s-style musical which Depp starred in prior to being cast on 21 Jump St.

  1. Benny & Joon is one of my favorites, too! It was the first Depp movie I ever saw. He’s such a wonderful actor!
