Greetings vamplings, tis I, Cruechik, back once again to discuss my favorite undead creatures. This time, it’s the vamps of True Blood, which after two long weeks of waiting, finally aired the finale of season 3 tonight.
Warning: If you haven’t seen Season 3 of True Blood, there be SPOILERS.
True Blood Season 3 saw the introduction of all kinds of “˜supes including werewolves — most importantly the drool-inducing Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello); fairies; and crazy inbred werepanthers. Our heroine, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and her favorite (or is he”¦hmm”¦?) vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) have had a series of skirmishes this season, and at the end of last epi’s cliffie, it once again appeared the part fae part human Sookie might not survive. Of more concern to me was whether or not VILF Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) would meet the true death. It didn’t look too good for Eric, who was out in the daylight frying like a catfish in a cast iron pan, handcuffed to insane “I carry my dead lover’s remains around in a candy jar” vamp king, Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare).
The finale did not disappoint, with several moments worthy of screaming “yes!”, “holy crap!”, and the occasional “oh no!” at the screen”¦ not sayin’ I did or anything”¦ but yeah, thank God for my dvr because I had to rewind more than once. Just when you thought it had reached it’s cliffie for the year (which, I might add, had it ended at that moment, would have majorly sucked, and would have caused me at least one night of “I’m not watching that show ever again”¦maybe”) one of the aforementioned “holy crap!” moments blared onto the screen and my Truebie status was saved.
Now, hopefully you’ve already seen the finale and you can go on to read my little Spoiler Talk. Read on for my favorite moments and lines from tonight’s episode, and add your thoughts in the Comments section below.
- We return to Fangtasia’s parking lot to see Eric (who, btw still looks good enough to eat, even when his flesh is frying) and Russell cooking under the Louisiana sun. Bill has fed and saved Sookie (again) and she runs outside to save Eric (who’s her favorite vamp?), but using her zappy fae power to snap the silver handcuffs and send Russell for a ride across the parking lot. She then has the privilege of feeding Eric her blood to revive him during which you can hear him sucking and moaning with pleasure at the taste of her blood”¦dear sweet mother of God”¦but I digress”¦
- Lovable but dumb as a bag of hammers Jason Stackhouse, who is in love with one of the inbreeding Hot Shot werepanthers [I could insert some witty pussy comment here, but that’s not how I roll ;)], finds himself in hot water with the feds after warning the supernatural version of the banjo picking kid from Deliverance that they’re on the way to bust the “V” selling ring and wipe out the whole town.
- Alcide Herveaux makes his triumphant return (clearly yet another supernatural creature with the hots for Miss Sookie) to help Eric”¦and a little fyi”¦there’s not much I like more than a scene with Eric AND Alcide. One of the best lines of the epi comes when Bill and Alcide are jealously glaring at each other and Eric, in his usual blasé tone says “Well, if you two are done eyefucking each other, can we go?” as he drags the crunchy and flaking Russell out to load him into Alcide’s van and get some much deserved revenge.
- The change in Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) from nice guy shapeshifting bartender to belligerent, revenge-seeking drunk in the last part of this season leaves me very curious about how the next season will unfold for him. The last we see of him, he is shooting at his younger brother who has just robbed him.
- I had high hopes for this finale and it honestly didn’t disappoint. I could do without the entire Hot Shot storyline, and Tara (who seems to be leaving Bon Temps for good after finding out Sam Merlotte, her one friend besides Sookie, is a shapeshifter) has been getting on my nerves for weeks. I am thrilled that Sookie finally knows the truth about Bill and I seriously screamed when the cement covered Eric appeared at her door. It’s unexpected moments like this that make this one of my favorite shows of all time. And the fact that Eric is naked a lot, well that doesn’t hurt either ;)
We’ll be waiting a long time for Season 4 to start, but in the meantime, let us know your thoughts on Season 3 and its finale.
I think this finale was much stronger than the ones before it. While Tara seemed to have taken the place of Maryann as the character everyone had enough of (seriously, I loved Wesley’s performance, but she just kept crying and crying). At least this wasn’t a “Kill the bad guy and spend the rest of the episode with one long long epilogue” scenario.
What they did to Russell was cool. If they decide to, they can bring him back later (not nearly as final as Maryann), and what happened to Eric was even better. I have to admit that I was shocked to see him get out of that and standing in front of Sookie’s door. My cousin and I watch the show every Sunday and we applauded that moment. He really popped Bill and Sookie’s bubble with that piece of information that traced itself back to the first episode. That was fantastic there. With Bill and Eric out of the way, they can open up Sookie to Alcide or someone in the future. I wouldn’t mind seeing Sookie with Eric, as he does have a heart (thought it’s as small as the Grinch, evidenced with the rooftop scene with Godric the season before). Bringing Godric back for even a moment was sweet to see.
I’m a little worried about Hoyt and Jessica. Hoyt’s mom wasn’t too keen on Jess from the start and now that she’s armed, something tells me that maybe the Romeo and Juliet story of next season. Jess loses Hoyt and becomes wild again, probably.
Sam’s become so dark. I’m not sure where that will lead him. He’s already burnt a number of bridges with everyone at Merlotte’s, so he really can’t go back there, can he? Something tells me you’ll see going down some weird roads.
The only storyline that irked me was Jason the Lion King. What’s he supposed to do with that litter of were folk? Will he get his girl back? I don’t know if I care about that as much as I do about the other storylines, really.

I thought it was good, but i’m getting tired of these cliff-hanger finale’s; last season it was the kidnapping, and now we have to wait again to see where Sookie went and what happens between Bill and the Queen. It’s maddening (but in a good way).
I like where Lafayette’s is going too, but really? Wizards? The show is getting a little too inundated with supernaturals for my liking. Can’t we have a few seasons to get used to the vampires, werewolves, and fairies before introducing ANOTHER group to the fray? Seriously, next season I’m expecting mummies.
As for the Jason subplot? It’s seems like a running gag now where at the end of the season Jason will get a purpose, only to later screw it up somehow; First there was the Fellowship of the Sun, then this cop thing, and now he has to protect a trailer park…it’s getting kind of old for me.
Overall, though, it was a great season and I’m excited to see what’s going to happen in season 4. Til then i just bought the Club Dead book to hold me over. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

I thought it was quite good actually. Did Sam shoot his brother? What do the Fey have in store for Sookie?
This is all coming from someone who has yet to read the books. I think Lafayette’s Mom isn’t crazy. If you ask me I am calling them both Voodoo Shamans, since this is the Alan Ball re-write.
Only time will tell and I can’t wait for season 4!

I have read the books. I know CH had a bunch of Supernaturals but the TV show has added a few themselves. EX Lafayette has been long gone by now and the show is making him a Shaman or something??? Don’t like it. The ending was blah and scattered. No OMG WTF moment for a finale. There were more through the rest of the season. I have said this on FB, if Season 4 doesn’t start right off the bat with Eric running naked through the woods I am done.

I love this series and I hope Season 4 doesn’t get all involved with the supernatural sub characters and sticks to the original cast doing what they do best.

Terrible. The season finale had some good moments for sure, but ultimately it failed to advance the plot at all. Good episode, but a terrible way to end the season.

Overall I thought the finale was on par with the rest of this season but I was not really impressed by the cliffhanger. In general the show feels scattered and the story lines don’t really seem to intersect very often. It is still entertaining to watch but I wish they would focus more on the central story.

I’m with Demonstrable. This season was all over the place, and the plot lines were too scattered and there were just too many of them. I was disappointed with the entire season, from start to finish. Episodes felt like they gave me whiplash from all the jumping from one to the next idea.
This show started as a fantastic drama that just happen to have supernatural characters. That drama is gone. It’s now just a boring soap opera with no discernible plot. The entire scene in the construction yard was horribly written and played so badly that you had to wonder if the actors knew that they were given shit to work with?
Conversely, the scene between Sookie and Alcide in the bar was beautifully done in a sweet very 7th grade “I like you” sort of way… that scene proves that this show can still be great if they’d stop going off point.
Note for Alan Ball – please bring the drama back. Right now, there isn’t any. Without that, all you’ve got is a Southern version of the Bold and the Beautiful with a slightly paler and sometimes a bit furry cast.

I think the episode did represent the entire season: very scattered. While the main vampire plot got enough attention, what was a very strong suit of previous seasons – the non-vampire plots, was a let down.
Sam’s family reunion was all over the place.
Jason and his new love story plus all of the inbred werepumas was just childish. Poorly scripted and making you want to think what other “weres” will show up in the next season. Compared to the Jason-The Man of Faith storyline, this just pushed out Jason to the Christmas ornament role.
The only subplots that didn’t disappoint me was Hoyt’s love for the vampire story and Tara’s story, mostly thanks to the psycho vampire tormentor of hers.

“The finale did not disappoint”? Pardon me, but I but have to disagree. This season’s finale was a total let down. For example, just how did Eric get out of the concrete? There were more loose ends like that than actual cliff hangers. The whole thing was like a bunch of random ideas stitched together that in the end made little sense. The first season was brilliant, the second so-so, and this third season failed. It was too busy with too many silly characters and dumb crazy going on at once for it to be as enjoyable as it had been previously. I mean you need a directory to keep up with the characters now. The finale was a gimmicky, corny mess and surprisingly disjointed, so much so that even the actors’ acting seemed wooden and thoroughly unconvincing at times. Currently the story line lacks focus in a major way, and they need to fix that or season 4 could be the last.
