NYCC 2010: Marvel’s X-Men Panel

Friday at New York Comic-Con 2010 brought another edition of Marvel‘s X-Men panel, and attendees got a few sneak peeks of some upcoming projects.

Probably the biggest announcement at the panel was the one with the least details. Towards the end of the panel, a new series called Age of X was announced with a promo picture with some obvious and not so obvious silhouettes of characters. Panel host and Marvel Sales Manager Arune Singh described it as “the end of mutants as we know them” and made it pretty clear that this series would at least be a spiritual successor (if not an actual sequel) to the fan-favorite “Age of Apocalypse” storyline from the 1990s. Singh said that more details including who will be writing the series, who will be handling the art, and who the mystery characters are will be revealed on Marvel’s webpage in a few weeks. The series will be out in January 2011.

January also will see the release of another new series, Wolverine & Jubilee: Curse of the Mutants. This series will be written by Kathryn Immonen (Runaways, Heralds) and feature art by Phil Noto (Avengers: The Origin). The mini-series spins out of the events currently taking place in the X-Men series, with Wolverine and Jubilee fighting and becoming vampires, and will look at how the two react to the end of that storyline.

If that wasn’t enough, and if you can’t get enough of Wolverine, March will see the release of another mini-series, this one titled Wolverine & The Incredible Hercules. This series will be written by Frank Tieri and will have art by Juan Santacruz, and it looks to be more of a fun spirited series, with the two hard drinking heroes touring the Marvel Universe.

I’m curious to see what this Age of X series turns out to be. I have fond memories of the Age of Apocalypse story, like a lot of X-fans do, so it could end up being an interesting story, although they’ve tried to dip into the well before and it hasn’t turned out so great. I wish they had just said who was writing it. As for the two new Wolverine series, well, it’s two new Wolverine stories, so if you can’t get enough, here’s more for you to buy. I always wonder who the target market is for all these Wolverine side projects, but if somebody is buying them, I guess it’s worth producing them. I am a little curious to see the Wolverine & Jubilee series, if only for the Phil Noto art, which should be worth the price alone.
