Yes, another story about Ricky Gervais! Yay!
I know you’re all thrilled, and this one will be the last for a while, promise…unless of course something else big enough to cover comes up tomorrow, of course.
It’s being reported that Gervais will have a cameo appearance on NBC’s hit comedy series, The Office. According to Vulture, Gervais will have a brief encounter with star Steve Carell, who’s soon leaving the show after seven solid seasons.
For those who don’t know, Carell plays the same role on the show that Gervais played on the original BBC series of the same name, which Gervais created. Since the American version has become so popular, there’s been many occasions where Gervais has thrown bitter fits at the success of others based on something he created (assumed to be completely staged for comedic purposes), including this past Sunday during the Golden Globes where he and Carell had a brief confrontation that many people were talking about.
For those of you hoping that this will be a big deal or that maybe even Gervais will be the one replacing Carell as the new boss (which would be pretty interesting), do not get your hopes too high. Show-runner Paul Lieberstein says “It’s a little more than if you blink, you’ll miss it, but if you don’t set your TiVo right, you’ll miss it.”
Apparently the cameo was so secret that not even NBC knew about it at first, and that the hopes were to have it happen without anyone having any sort of prior knowledge. It was actually filmed months ago, back in September, and Gervais did it for free having always wanted to make an appearance on the U.S. reincarnation.
With Carell getting set to leave, they wanted the two managers to have one brief encounter while they still could, Lieberstein explained:
Ricky had wanted to do something [with the U.S. Office] and it felt like we shouldn’t go the whole series without them connecting. But we had some issues to work out, like how does David Brent live in the world of Michael Scott.
It [takes place] outside of the office, and it’s just the two of them interacting. It’s just a little nod to Steve and his final year.
This will take place at the very beginning of the January 27th episode BEFORE the title sequence even runs, so if you’re recording it, be sure to add a few minutes to the start to be safe!
