Earth's Mightiest Heroes: The Avengers

The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes was a welcome surprise from Marvel Studios. It’s an animated series that’s crafted in such a way that fans of all ages can enjoy it. The series is on Disney XD which is a difficult sell to any fan above a certain demographic, but if you just hold your breath and flip over there the show will impress. Hardcore comic book fans will see the show is loosely based on Brian Michael Bendis’s Avenger’s Disassembled story arc, or at least the aftermath of that story. At any rate, the series features classic Avengers heroes on the team including Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, The Wasp, Ant Man/Giant Man, Hawkeye, and Black Panther.

If you aren’t the type to set foot in Disney kidville, then you can still see the show because Disney has announced that the first 13 episodes are coming to DVD, conveniently broken up into two volumes. Episodes 1 – 7 will be in Volume 1 and Episodes 8 – 13 will be presented in Volume 2. Both sets will be available on DVD April 26, 2011. At this point the only bonus feature we know of is a look at the upcoming Season 2 on the second volume.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes: The Avengers Hawkeye

Volume 1
1. Iron Man Is Born!
2. Thor The Mighty
3. Hulk Versus The World
4. Meet Captain America
5. The Man in the Ant Hill
6. Breakout: Part One
7. Breakout: Part Two

Volume 2
8. Some Assembly Required
9. Living Legend
10. Everything Is Wonderful
11. Panthers Quest
12. Gamma World: Part One
13. Gamma World: Part Two

Ok, this is a short season, so why the two volumes? The easy answer seems to be a money grab. There’s more room for profit in selling two completely separate sets. This is happening more and more with cable television shows. With many series you can wait a little and complete series box sets eventually come out, but that’s not always the case for lower budget animated shows. Battlestar Galactica did eventually come out in complete seasons and finally a complete series box set, but the X-Men animated series from the 90’s is still only available in volumes. You can get special deals on the volumes together, but they’re still volumes and not complete season box sets. So, if you’re a fan of this series, and you should be, then you may be stuck buying volumes.

  1. Are they then releasing the Kang three parter (I believe it’s three) as a feature? Because it was originally part of season one. Hmm…talk about a money grab…

But yeah, it’s a really fantastic show. Huge fan.

  2. Ah yes the multiple volume money grab. It’s kind of lame that they aren’t giving this a Blu-ray release, although maybe they are going to give a complete season release that way.
