We’ve known for a long while now that Disney still had big plans for their Pirates of the Caribbean franchise after their latest installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was announced. As far as we knew, the hopes were to do another whole trilogy with fifth and sixth installments also eventually being made.
After the firing of Dick Cook, however, there were a lot of whispers that star Johnny Depp was furious and that if he did return for Pirates 4, it would be his last. Fast forward about a year and a half later, and here we are. On Stranger Tides is about to hit on May 20 and there seems to be a strong buzz behind it, indicating all is well with the franchise. So in order to stay on top of things, super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has already ordered work to begin on a script for the next movie, Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
We won’t know for sure if the next movie will get an official greenlight until On Stranger Tides is released, of course. Even with a lot of buzz — as well as reports that the movie is testing very well — if it doesn’t deliver big box office numbers, Disney will be reluctant risk another one. There’s also the Depp factor; the superstar has always made it clear how much he loves this character he’s created, but another movie doesn’t happen if he walks away. This means any issues with Disney need to be patched (if they haven’t already) and he needs to be happy with the current cast, crew, and story arc they have planned for a second trilogy.
If I had to guess, at least two more movies will happen. These flicks are too much fun and too successful to stop making unless On Stranger Tides flops big time, which won’t happen.
I say bring them on. Keep bringing them. So long as Depp is involved and some of the popular supporting cast is there, it’d be very hard for these to movies to cease being a ton of fun to head out to theaters and see every couple of years. What say you?
