Geeks of Doom Invades WonderCon 2011

Ryan Reynolds At WonderconRyan Reynolds, star of the upcoming film Green Lantern based on the DC Comics character, was on hand at WonderCon 2011 to answer questions from fans and talk a little bit about some new footage from the movie.

Most of what was shown was not part of the previously released trailers and the footage is not yet online, so here’s a description of the extended clip.

The footage starts out with Sinestro conversing with Abin Sur when a yellow beast, the deadly Parallax, begins attacking him, a.k.a kicking his ass. When Abin Sur is wounded, he escapes back to his spacecraft en route to Earth.

“Head for the nearest planet and begging the selection process,” Abin Sur says, then immediately cuts to a shot of his glowing blue spacecraft in front of a exasperated Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who sees Abin Sur’s oozing purple wounds and pulls him from the spacecraft.

“Stay with me!,” Hal says, with Abin Sur replying, “Your name is Hal Jordan”¦ the ring, it chose you. Place the ring in the lantern, speak the oath,” he says as he breathes one final breath and then passes away. They then cut to a scene in Hal’s apartment where he places the lantern on his coffee table, puts on the ring, and begins to recite “the oath.”

“I, Hal Jordan, pledge allegiance to a lantern, with a ring that I got from a dying purple alien”¦” says Hall, which got a nice laugh from the crowd that quickly turned serious as the Lantern possessed him placing the correct words into his head.

Hal is then skyrocketed upward into space where he passes a satellite, two astronauts, and onward to the planet Oa. After a bright white light flashes, Hal’s in a Green Lantern suit and on the planet. He makes a strange punching motion and is then greeted by the Green Lantern Tomar-Re (who will be voiced by Geoffrey Rush in the film).

Tomar-Re asks Hal if he’s concluded looking at himself in the costume and explains that he was sent to greet Hal. Tomar-Re explains that humans are the youngest species the Lantern induction process has ever been performed on. Tells Hal he doesn’t need his Mask and introduces him to Oa.

Cut to a scene with Sinestro talking to all of the Lantern warriors about Parallax, a creature that can destroy entire civilizations and even their greatest Lantern, Abin Sur. “I don’t need to tell you your duty, don’t need to tell you who we are,” Sinestro says, rallying the crowded ranks. They then cut to many of the same scenes shown in the previously released trailer.
