Marvel is teasing details of its new MMORPG based on the Marvel Universe by setting up a protected twitter account under the guise of M.M.M. Society (@MMMSociety). The account’s description reads, “The Marvel Massively Multiplayer Society is your gateway to the Marvel Universe, Marvel’s upcoming epic MMO” and features a link to a password-protected Tumblr page.
Comic fans have been awaiting news of a Marvel MMO ever since the company terminated its plans to create a game with City of Heroes developers Cryptic Studios, (which later morphed into Champions Online).
The MMM Society is the first bit of news we’ve heard regarding the company’s MMO since 2009, when Geeks of Doom was alerted to a job posting seeking developers for the project. But while a covert promotional campaign about a Marvel MMO may signal that we’ll start to see some concrete information about what to expect from the game, it will likely be years before it launches.
For now, fans will just have to play the waiting game until Agent M and his wonderful editorial minions release the password for the M.M.M. Society’s Tumblr page. And the only way to get that seems to be by following MMMSociety on Twitter.
And as always, we’ll update you with more details as they unfold.
I wonder how successful this could be? Not that there isn’t a pent up interest in an MMORPG from Marvel but there are a few more superhero-based games out there now than there were way back when Marvel first announced such an endeavor. It’s become a somewhat crowded genre. City of Heroes/Villains seems to be the standard (and I’m still enjoying that one periodically), DC Online is OK, wasn’t a big fan of Champions Online but it’s got a following of it’s own, plus a few other superhero interpretations that have come and gone since then (I think I recall Freedom Force?). While Marvel is teasing a near future release (and seem to be gearing up for it with this Twitter account), it might be too late for success by the time it finally reaches market. Unless they do something that hasn’t been done before, like possibly release their MMORPG to a console? Thoughts?
