For J.J. Abrams, ‘Star Trek’ Characters Come Before A Release Date

JJ Abrams - Star Trek

If there is one thing J.J. Abrams is apparently really damn good at, it’s putting a punch back into a seemingly stale franchise.

Not only did he help revive the Mission: Impossible franchise, but following in the wake of his 2009 hit Star Trek, that sci-fi franchise couldn’t be more popular. But that’s not getting to the director’s head, as to him, nothing comes before the characters and plot for the much anticipated sequel.

The director recently spoke to Collider, and revealed that nothing will be happening until he gets the characters and script all set into place.

Here’s what the director had to say:

Yeah. There have been a lot of things that we’ve been working on, a lot of important elements that we just know we need to really nail down and solve. Once you say, “We’re ready to go, but we don’t have a finished script yet,” or “I’m directing the thing and here’s the release date, but we don’t have a finished script,” what starts to happen – and I’ve seen this happen with a lot of friends of mine – is that you’re suddenly in production on a movie that they’re thinking, “Oh my god, we weren’t really ready. We thought we’d get it done in time, but we didn’t.” So, while we have a moment to say, “Let’s get the important things figured out,” then all the pre-production stuff will come. But, I just want to make sure that we’re putting the story and the characters, the cast and the crew, and most importantly the audience, first before we start talking about exactly which locations we’re going to be shooting at and what the wardrobe and visual effects budgets are. It just seems important that we get the important stuff right first.

The writing team of Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof are hard at work on a script for the sequel, and while I’m not the biggest fan of the new film (I definitely found it thrilling while watching it, but have since lost a bit of enjoyment in it), this is one sequel I can’t wait to see. I think Abrams is going about this the right way, so here’s hoping he can continue his streak of making kick-ass pieces of science fiction.

  1. Yeah, but at what cost?  They should have had a new movie out by this Summer and now we’re easily looking at 2013.  The movie going public doesn’t have a good attention span, so the sequel is coming a bit too late.  At most they’ll get what…3 movies in before the cast splits up?
