Disney Gives Us New Glimpses At ‘The Avengers’ and More ‘Toy Story’ Shorts At D23

Marvel's The Avengers

While the weekend doesn’t normally bring the largest amount of news, this weekend was far different. Thanks to Disney and their D23 convention, not only has the world seen new footage from the Marvel and Disney production The Avengers, but Pixar has also enlightened us with the premise for a brand new Toy Story short film.

First, The Avengers was a major player at this year’s convention, as a new sizzle reel premiered, giving attendees a look at quite a bit of footage. Our friends over at /Film attended the expo, and have gone out of their way to post a description of the footage, which you can read an excerpt of here after the break.

It begins with Loki being locked in a large, circular glass room that’s very technologically advanced. Nick Fury walks in, presses some buttons on a touch screen and warns him: “In case it’s unclear, if you try to escape, you even scratch on the glass, it’s 30,000 feet straight down.” We see the floor open up revealing we’re on the Helicarrier. Loki says it’s an impressive cage, but not for him, and challenges Fury by asking how desperate is he to do what he has done. Fury retorts by saying that Loki has brought his world to the brink of war and “you kill because it’s fun, so you made me very desperate.” Loki taunts him by saying Fury was so close to true power. He had the tesseract (aka the Cosmic Cube) and but now he, Loki, will remind you what real power is. Fury responds by saying, “Tell me if real power wants a magazine.”

You can read the rest of the lengthy description over at /Film.

Now, while I doubt that this footage will be hitting the web any time soon, it does sound really great. Obviously, expo footage is not the judge of a great film, but it does definitely bode well for what sounds like a killer bit of superhero filmmaking.  This project has so much riding on it, particularly the future of any other large comic book projects, so hopefully it can live up to the hype.

Disney also revealed the plot synopsis for the new Toy Story short film, which is going to be titled Small Fry, and will play in front of The Muppets later this year.  The film will follow Buzz, who is “left behind at a fast food restaurant when a kids’ meal toy version of Buzz takes his place. While Bonnie’s toys are stuck with the annoying 3-inch-tall Buzz impersonator, the real Buzz is trapped in the restaurant at a support group for discarded toys. As Woody and the gang devise a way to rescue their friend, Buzz tries to escape the toy psychotherapy meeting.” [via /Film]

  1. I was hoping to actually have a new “glimpse” at something visual. Will admit the description, plus what I’ve read at /Film, does sound pretty interesting. More pictures though! Already see sneak peaks of Captain America 2 lurking around the web. More Avengers please!
