Often both Marvel and DC can do too many spin-offs from their most popular titles. You’d think DC Comics is all about Batman or Superman and Marvel Comics is all about Wolverine or Spider-Man. Sometimes these spin-off series can offer up some entertaining stories though. In mid October, Marvel will be releasing Avengers Solo #1 featuring Hawkeye. Yes it’s another Avengers book. That’s exactly what I thought too. But this story is already intriguing.

A dead body is on the steps of Avengers headquarters and the Avengers are taking the blame. This is not some epic battle for Earth’s survival, it’s a murder mystery. It’s up to Hawkeye to go detective and learn the truth about the mysterious death. Marvel promises a dark conspiracy in this story. A subtle side story sounds like a nice break from the years of epic conflict we’ve been getting from the Avengers books. Brian Michael Bendis is usually really good at telling these sorts of small dialogue-driven character studies but he is obviously otherwise occupied. So Jen Van Meter will be the wordsmith and artist Roger Robinson will be handing the art.
Writer Jim Mccann and artist Clayton Henry will be crafting a backup story featuring Henry Pym just to make things a little more interesting. The most excellent cover for Avengers Solo #1 was done by John Tyler Christopher. Scroll on down to check that cover out along with a few additional pages from the book. Avengers Solo #1 hits store shelves on October 19, 2011.
