Never let it be said that Arnold Schwarzenegger is a slacker; ever since leaving the office as Governor of California, the mighty Austrian Oak has set about relaunching his career as an big-screen action hero with a beefed-up supporting role in The Expendables 2 and taking on the lead in the forthcoming modern day western The Last Stand, the English-language debut of acclaimed Korean director Jee-woon Kim (I Saw the Devil).
Today, Schwarzenegger has tweeted the first picture of himself in full costume on the set of The Last Stand, along with co-stars Jaimie Alexander (Thor), Luiz Guzman (The Limey), and professional Jackass Johnny Knoxville.
The plot of the film revolves around a former LAPD officer-turned-border town sheriff (Schwarzenegger) who must rally his inexperienced deputies to defend their town from a drug lord who has escaped from Federal custody and is heading hard and fast for Sheriff Schwarzenegger’s domain with a tricked-out battle car and a army of killers ready for all-out war. The story has echoes of classic westerns such as High Noon and Rio Bravo, which makes me smile. Plus there’s so much coolness in this picture, from Ah-nuld looking born-again hard and packing Thompson machine guns with Asgardian warrior princess Alexander (plus she rocks that bulletproof vest like nobody’s business) to Guzman sporting an impressive Stetson and looking relieved to be playing a good guy for once. Are those jeans relaxed fit?
The Last Stand also stars Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Peter Stormare (The Big Lebowski), Rodrigo Santoro (300), and Harry Dean Stanton (Repo Man). The movie opens on January 18, 2013.
