Never let it be said that Pink Floyd doesn’t know how to mark an occasion in grand style. Back in September, to celebrate the start of EMI Records’ “Why Pink Floyd?” marketing campaign that will see the rerelease of 14 of the band’s studio albums among other things, organizers staged a recreation of the famous cover art for the band’s 1977 album Animals.

For the cover of Animals a 30-foot vinyl inflatable pig was flown high above the Battersea Power station in London. During the 1977 photo shoot the pig broke loose and strayed into the flight path at Heathrow Airport, but fortunately it was later recovered. A replica of the original pig was commissioned for the recreation as the original, which had been in storage for the past 35 years, was discovered to have leaks. Another replica of the famous Animals pig was floating above the Capitol Records building in Los Angeles.

In addition to the 14 album rereleases EMI will also be also be releasing new Pink Floyd DVDs, Blu-ray discs, Super Audio CD’s, iPhone applications, and a single disc greatest hits collection by the band. There’s also special edition releases of three of Pink Floyd’s best known albums – Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall – in both two-disc “immersion” and 5-6 disc “experience” editions. Dark Side was released on September 26; Wish You Were Here on November 7; and The Wall is scheduled for February 27, 2012.
