Dark Horse Comics announced that starting December 14, 2011 the company will be releasing every comic book on the same day digitally as the print version hits store shelves. This news comes on the heels of a couple of major sales the company had via its digital app over the Thanksgiving weekend. Dark Horse offered both Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals that must have been fairly successful to prompt this announcement.
Dark Horse and Marvel Comics both seem to be making very quick decisions on digital plans based on experiments, but Dark Horse is truly embracing the format by making every single release day and date with print. That makes their commitment even stronger than that of DC Comics, who are releasing every issue of their new 52 titles day and date.
The press release from Dark Horse doesn’t give any firm numbers outside of just saying that they’ve seen “huge success with digital sales” and that “Dark Horse Digital has grown significantly in numbers and readership” The company credits several key titles for making the app a success including Buffy, Star Wars, Angel & Faith, and Dollhouse.
Dark Horse currently offers 800 comics in its app, but with a continued push toward bringing catalog titles to digital readers and this new day and date initiative that number is sure to grow quickly. You can get the Dark Horse Digital app for Android, web browsers, and iOS. This announcement is significant to comic book readers that aren’t Dark Horse fans because this company has become the third largest publisher of comics, so they do have some influence on the direction that comics take.
